Owls are a recurring image in Alex Costantino's work. He writes that this "icon of wisdom and strength and a brutal, nocturnal hunter ... is at times mysterious link to mystical terrain and at other times a connection to the natural world."
Mr. Constantino has been a member of the Artists in Residence Cooperative in Enosburg Falls since late summer.
He works in a different media including ceramics, paint, pencil, print, video, and installation.
"I've never really thought of myself as a sculptor but I've had a gradual romance with clay," he said. He has a studio for 2D pencil work in Burlington but started in 3D at a clay party in grad school where he carved and painted on friends' pieces. "I completely fell in love with throwing in 2010."
He is "enormously happy" with the amount he has developed as an artist since then.
The AIR Gallery has all ceramics. "I'm enormously proud of [Strata of Being, the featured] piece. It's in the gallery window as you walk by."
A Baltimore native but Winooski resident, Mr. Costantino teaches art at Enosburg Elementary and at Burlington City Arts, where he is an active member of their ceramics community. He holds a BFA in Printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from the University of South Florida.
