ART ON THE WALLS

MONTGOMERY--Capturing The Light, the works of Viatcheslav Protopopov, closes with a reception at the Montgomery Center for the Arts on Sunday at 1 p.m. Mr. Protopopov's daughter, Montgomery resident Sasha Elliott will repeat her story of the life and work of her father at the reception. There will be traditional Russian food and drinks. The show is open on Saturday and Sunday, 12 noon - 4 p.m. Find them on Facebook for more info.


ST. ALBANS--The Artist In Residence collection spotlight is on mixed media artist Meta Strick. The art and fine craft cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 38 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. JEFFERSONVILLE--Bryan Memorial Gallery features a perspective on our landscapes by Charlie Hunter whose "goal is to paint beautifully that which is not traditionally considered beautiful. Sorta like a less-grotesque Anselm Keifer in a better mood. Using a squeegee helps." They are in the Stowe Gallery and on Facebook .
      The gallery has exhibits of the landscape painters of New England. The main showcase in Jeffersonville is open Wednesday-Sunday 11 - 4 and the Stowe Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 - 5. Appointments are available. DANCE

NORTH HERO--The joy of community dancing to lively music returns to Island Arts with International Folk Dancing with instructor Lesley Alpert at the North Hero House Pier on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
      All dances are taught. No partner required. No experience required, and new students are always welcome. Bring your water bottle. Classes will continue most Fridays through September 26. FILM

JAY--UMATR hosts the grand premier of The Celebration at the Clips and Reels Theater at Jay Peak Resort at 7 p.m. Doors at 6:30. The Vermont-made film highlights the Missisquoi and Trout Rivers and discusses the process undertaken by the Upper Missisquoi and Trout Rivers Wild and Scenic Committee and the Missisquoi River Basin Association to get them added to the list of impressive national rivers. HUMANITIES

     Vermont Humanities has two live events in our area this week:
NORTH HERO--The Reading and Discussion series takes on Seminal Statements of American Values at the North Hero Public Library this evening at 5 p.m. This event will focus on the Constitution of the United States. Call Caroline Korejko (802.372.5458) or click here for more info.
JEFFERSONVILLE--VHC presents Tobin Anderson to discuss the Power of Landscape at Bryan Memorial Gallery on Saturday at 6 p.m. Doors at 5:30. The best selling author considers the politics of beautiful scenery and hidden national longings behind our sense of landscape as the state prepares to review Act 250. SWANTON--Calling all Blues fans. Celebrate Make Music Day with Stories of the Blues, a free live demonstration and discussion of the Blues with Missisquoi Slim, at the Swanton Free Public Library on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. Missisquoi Slim is a vintage instrument collector and a lifelong fan of the blues who has played locally and nationally. He will share the artists, instruments and stories of the time. Admission is free, thanks the Swanton Arts Council. Click here for more info.


JUNETEENTH and SUMMER SOLSTICE EVENTS

AROUND THE COUNTY--Most libraries and Town offices will be closed on today in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.


FAIRFAX--The third annual Fairfax Juneteenth Celebration will fill the Community Center today from 3 - 8 p.m. The Congolese Choir will perform around 6:30 p.m. There will be a Bouncy Castle, free scoop from Ben & Jerry, and free chicken from Jilib Jiblets. There will be informational material about this holiday and recognition of BFA-Fairfax student projects.


AROUND THE STATE--Make Music Vermont brings music makers of all ages together on the first day of summer for a free celebration of music-making that takes place on the same day in more than 120 countries and 1,000 cities across the globe. Anyone can take part in Make Music Vermont. It's the longest day of the year, the best to spend making music!


NORTH HERO--The Island Arts Summer Solstice Celebration with Kim & Bob Muncil and special guest Laleh Nader takes place in the longhouse at Camp Ingalls on Friday at 7:30 p.m. rain or shine. The evening celebration will include live music, sun salutations, sing-a-long chants, a gong immersion, and more. Bring a yoga mat. Admission is by $15 suggested donation. THEATER

ST. ALBANS--The Burlesque Act Development series showcases Doctor Vu and The Rising Stars of Rail City at the Depot on Friday at 7 p.m. The workshop series has guided performers through the elements of crafting burlesque performances, entertainment, and choreograpahy.

WORKSHOPS & CLASSES

MORRISVILLE--River Arts continues the three-workshop series, Art in the Open: Plein Air Mornings with River Arts, with Vermont artist Evie Mason on Saturday at 10 a.m. - 12 noon. Classes will be held each Saturday through June 28. Students will meet at River Arts and walk together to a colorful group of handcrafted, whimsical birdhouses. Tuition is $40 for a single workshop. MILTON--Social Sundays continue at the Milton Artists' Guild Art Center with free weekly art classes for families at MAG on Sunday at 1 p.m. Each week offers a different project. Stay for 30 minutes or the whole two hours. Click here for more info.

Thursday, Juneteenth
ST ALBANS TOWN--The weekly St. Albans Bay Farmer's Market and Concert Series continues with the Old Man Garage Band today from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. They have live music every Thursday evening into September. ESSEX JUNCTION--The Sparky's Blues Jam has the Vermont Blues Society, hosted by David and Matthew Nerbak, Eric Belrose, and Larry Vigneault, this evening at 6 - 9 p.m. Food at 5 p.m. The Blues Jam will continue every other Thursday through the end of the summer. ST. ALBANS--Irons & Ale has music at Champlain Country Club with the Missisquoi River Band with special guest Will Patton tonight at 6 p.m. The restaurant is open 11 a.m. to close every day with pub fare from nachos and chicken wings to salads, burgers, salmon, and chicken to dinner options and libations.


SOUTH HERO--Nobby Reed plays the Music in the Vineyard series at Snow Farm Vineyard this evening at 6:30 p.m. The summer music series continues with well known musicians, wine, and food every Thursday. Click here for more info.

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap starts a weekend of music with Devon McGarry Unplugged tonight at 6 p.m. Sibling Reverie is in the house on Friday at 5 p.m., and then Mirage returns for late night music live on Saturday night at 9 p.m. Call 802.878.3309 or email for more info. SOUTH HERO--Two Heroes Brewery has music most weeks. Thursdays with Jason features Aaron Flynn on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. Waves of Adrenaline take the stage on Friday and TBA plays live on Saturday. Music starts at 6:30 p.m.

MORRISVILLE--Moog's Place has long weekends, Thursday through Wednesday, of music in June. Michael Perry leads Open Mic Night tonight. Big Homie Wes & Sam Guihan light up the night on Friday. Blackwolf howls on Saturday. The sound system takes the day off on Sunday. Seth Yacovone plays a solo acoustic set on Monday. And Jim Charonko is there for Wednesday night live.


Friday, June 20
MILTON--The Friday Night Live Music and Buffet at Arrowhead Golf Course presents Carol Ann Jones with Will Patton on the deck on Friday at 6:30 p.m. The pulled pork buffet starts around 7 p.m. Both run until 9 p.m. The buffet costs $15 per person ($7 for each child). ST. ALBANS--The Taphouse at Mill River has shows on Friday and Saturday nights in June. Bushey Bedell & Branon play Friday and the Tapouse get justified with Justice 3 live on Saturday. Music starts about 6 p.m. Find them on Facebook for more info.


FRANKLIN--The Dick Wright Pub has a double header this weekend.
      An Evening of Pure B.S. with Jerry Bowers and Tyrone Shaw sells the odd used car or two Live at the Pub on Friday at 6 p.m. After a lifetime in "Vermont's most romantic band," as a duo they are essentially unplugged and, sometimes unhinged.       Make Music Vermont is a festival for all Vermonters and Uncle John's Band will do it at the Pub on Saturday at 7 p.m. Find them on Facebook for more info.
      Both events are BYOB. Admission is by suggested donation of $10.

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs often has shows on Friday and Saturday nights. This week they host TBA on Friday. Laura Fedele-Rasco returns to "play all your favorites" live on Saturday night. ST. ALBANS--Northwest Farmers Market fills Taylor Park with live music, handmade crafts, locally grown food, prepared foods, free kids activities on Saturday from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. Third Shift plays music for planting gardens this Saturday. ENOSBURG--Free Summer Concerts in the Park are back with the Enosburg Town Band on the Lincoln Park Bandstand on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The evening also includes arts and crafts activities thanks to the Enosburg Public Library, popcorn and drinks to support the Enosburg Business Association, and ice cream sundaes to support the Franklin County Cat Crusaders. ST. ALBANS--The Citizens Concert Band begins its summer schedule in the St. Albans Summer Concert Series in the Edric Loomis Memorial Bandstand in Taylor Park on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Note the special time. Under the direction of Jeremy Berger, the community band plays a series of free, outdoor summer concerts in towns around Franklin County. Their rich history dates back to 1947. ST. ALBANS--The very special live performance of Soulshine Revival with Phil Graziano at Twiggs has been rescheduled to this Wednesday at 7 p.m. Vermont's tribute to the Allman Brothers Band has the seminal catalogue of the singalongs and jams with spot on guitar and vocal harmonies, two drummers, a real Hammond B-3 organ with Leslie speaker, improv, and slide guitar in front of a dazzling video backdrop. FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

HIGHGATE and SHELDON--Two area libraries have Alyx Hilshey, returning with Library Magic this Saturday. The Highgate Library and Community Center presents Alyx the Magician at the library on Saturday at 10 a.m. She disappears from Highate to appear in Sheldon as the Sheldon Free Library makes her magically appear at the Sheldon Fire Station at 1:30 p.m.
      No registration is required and admission is free. The Vermont magician is a nationally touring comedy illusionist. She was a 2024 feature magician on Penn & Teller: Fool Us on YouTube. And she has a Master's in Electrical Engineering.


ST. ALBANS--The Eloquent Page Mystery Book Club meets for the original Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett on Wednesday at 6 p.m. Sam Spade is hired by Miss Wonderley to track down her sister, who has eloped with a louse named Thursby. Mayhem follows, The book established the genre of "hard-boiled" detective and introduced the iconic, cynical, and morally ambiguous private investigator who has been the subject of other novels, movies, and now a series on Netflix. NORTH HERO--The Island Arts Book Sale & Silent Auction fills (and overflows) the Homer Knight Barn at the Island Arts Center on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. The sale will have more than 3,000 books, all organized by subject including biographies, cooking, fiction, history, mysteries, psychology, travel, true stories, and more. There are paperbacks, hard-covers, and some beautiful coffee table books. The silent auction has gift certificates for local restaurants, pubs, and other attractions, and more.
