COVID NEWS

A second Vermont resident has a confirmed a case of measles. The Vermont Department of Health said there is no ongoing risk of measles from this case in Vermont. It is unrelated to the one reported in April. The Health Department encourages people to make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations. Individuals refusing vaccines drives the spread of infectious diseases from measles to polio to COVID to RSV.
COVID-19 is still here even if data reporting has taken the summer off. KP.3, the now dominant variant, is as transmissible and perhaps more so than previous variants. For the two weeks ending on July 6, KP.3 accounted for 36.9% of positive infections followed by KP.2 at 24.4%. The FliRT variants together account for more than two-thirds of all cases. Franklin County has less than 8% of the state population and has had more than one-third of statewide hospitalizations.
Updated 2024-2025 vaccines are available for COVID and RSV. COVID vaccines are 100% free to everyone 6 months and older living in the United States. Click here for more info.
My own plan remains unchanged, especially since our precautions have waned and the current JN.1 variant dodges all but the most up-to-date immunity. I got the COVID and Flu shots, and the boosters, and I still take precautions because neither vaccine nor "natural immunity" is 100% foolproof. I wash my hands. I double mask with a genuine N95 mask (not a bandana and not a "chin strap") plus a surgical mask everywhere I can't control the airflow. It isn't much of a burden and it mostly protects me from all the people without masks I see in stores and concerts.
