JAZZ IN THE CITY

ST. ALBANS--St Albans Community Arts presents Michael Zsoldos and the BFA Jazz Band joining Trio Jota Sete for an evening of jazz at the BFA Performing Arts Center on Friday at 7 p.m.
      Saxophonist and composer Michael Zsoldos is a native of St. Albans now based in Woodstock, Vermont. Mr. Zsoldos is a member of the NYC-based Miro Sprague Quintet and Eugene Umana's Convergence Project. He teaches jazz and classical saxophone and music theory at Dartmouth College, and for eight years was the saxophone instructor at the University of Vermont. He has performed with Paquito DaRivera, Sheila Jordan, Kevin Mahogony, Houston Person, Luis Perdomo, Jason Palmer, Matt Wilson, Bernadette Peters, Carole King, Ben Vereen, Bebe Winans, Yolanda Adams, and many others. His debut CD as a leader, Off the Cuff, is playing on streaming services and jazz radio stations worldwide.
      Trio Jota Sete is known for its original material, selections from Brazilian composers such as Jobim, Guinga, Garoto and Edu Lobo, and arrangements of choice Jazz standards.

DREAM, LOVE, LIVE ART BIGGER

HIGHGATE--The MVU Music Program hosts an All-Day Arts Festival in the space around the Theater on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
      The fundraiser for the MVU Theater Musical program hosts Vermont crafters, artistic displays, and a live performers on stage. There will be a silent auction, a bake sale, and arts/crafts workshops. An all-ages Open Mic will be open to the public starting at 6:30 p.m. to sing, play an instrument, dance, do stand-up comedy or any combination.

ART FOR THE WALLS

ST. ALBANS--It's a busy week at the Grind Cafe.
      The cafe hosts a Family Paint and Sip on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. All ages are welcome to paint a beautiful feather. $20 per person includes all supplies, one non-alcoholic drink, and a fresh in-house-made cookie.
      The Grind continues How to Draw Portraits at the Cafe on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. Each lesson will be adjusted for any age group and skill level. The class will host an art show during week 6. This week's topic is Scaly Animals and Dragons. Future lessons will cover cartoons, portraits, comics and an artist study of Georgia O'Keefe.
      The cost is $10 per week or $55 for all six lessons which includes supplies. Find them on Facebook to reserve a spot.


EAST Fairfield--Art from the Center, the Fairfield Community Center's new program for adults and "older kids," offers introductory workshops in painting, drawing, printmaking, and photography on Saturdays beginning March 10 and running through the middle of April. IN THE SAC

SWANTON--The Swanton Writer's Group hosts Bill Schubart in a Memoir-Writing Workshop for your own or your family's story, at the Swanton Free Public Library on Thursday at 6 p.m. Mr. Schubart, a Vermont writer, humorist, and regular VPR commentator, is a former board member of the Vermont Journalism Trust, the umbrella organization for VTDigger.org All are welcome.
      The Swanton Arts Council will also hold the Swanton Arts Spectacular Planning Meeting at the Swanton Chamber of Commerce Building on Sunday starting at 4 p.m.


FILM

ST. ALBANS--Get swept away by The Princess Bride, the 1987 fairytale of a beautiful young woman and her one true love, in The Room at 14th Star Brewing Company this evening at 6:30 p.m.
      There will be plenty of seating, or feel free to bring a blanket and pillow and get cozy on the floor. Free popcorn and hot cocoa for all who attend.

Thursday
ST. ALBANS--The BFA Drama Improv Team returns with new material to the Grind Cafe this evening at 6 p.m. Be ready for some laughs and a good time.


SOUTH HERO--Carol Ann Jones plays a Third Thursday solo show at the Blue Paddle Bistro tonight at 6:30 p.m. The Blue Paddle has limited seating and a small bar so call ahead (802.372.4814) to assure a seat.

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap offers Summer Sounds favorites Jenni Johnson & the Jazz Junketeers on Thursday at 7 p.m., Bethany and Troy (Summer Sounds favorites Bethany Connor and Troy Millette) on Friday at 5 p.m., and Shake the Band on Saturday at 9 p.m.

Thursday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--The Cupid Show and TNT Comedy Showcase continues on the Main Stage at Twiggs on TNT Comedy Thursday at 7 p.m. Doors at 6:30. Love, chocolates, flowers and broken dreams offer comedians Tony Bates and Joel Klein, with special guest, Brooklyn-based Jake Fromm, hosted by Eliza Beth. Suzan Ambrose hosts open mic. This is a free show for mature audiences and space has been filling up quickly; call Twiggs to reserve a table. Make dinner reservations prior to the show since only drinks, appetizers, and desserts will be served during the show.
      Next up, Twiggs presents the Bob Mackenzie Blues Trio with Harmonica Bob, Dennis Willmott, and Missisquoi Slim on Friday and Boston singer/songwriter Ryan Sweezey on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

ST. ALBANS--Bluesman Nobby Reed performs with the Houserockers at the American Legion on Friday at 7 p.m.

ST. ALBANS--14th Star Brewing presents Summer Sounds favorites IncaHOOTS on Saturday at 6 p.m.
      The special event is a chance to enjoy the music, dancing and Vermont's own beer with Dave Long, Jeff Wenig, Kevin Connelly and John Geno.


Wednesday
ST. ALBANS--Sean Jarvis hosts Open Mic Night at Durty Nelly's Irish Pub on Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m.
      Show off your talent; everyone is welcome to grab the mic and perform any Wednesday evening on the Tavern side.


FEBRUARY-MARCH ART DEADLINES

COLLABORATIVE MUSIC RESIDENCY (February 19)--The I-Park Foundation seeks five composers to team with the Akropolis Reed Quintet to refine chamber ensemble works to a state of concert readiness, culminating in performances in CT and NYC. East Haddam, CT residencies are fully funded, and include private room, meals, a studio recording and $1,000 stipend. Application Fee. Call 860.873.2468, email, or click here for more info.


BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY (March 2)--South Shore Art Center has an open call for the upcoming National Juried Show. No straight reproductions or giclees. All works must be for sale. Entry Fee. Click here for more info and to enter.


THIRD ANNUAL YOUTH ART SHOW (March 16)--The Swanton Arts Council deadline artwork submissions for the Show dates are March 23rd and 24th. Email for more info.


DIGITAL ART: IN THE GROOVE (March 10)--Celebrate the creative relationship between music and art in a juried exhibition of cover art.
