     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

BIG MUSIC WEEKS

FRANKLIN COUNTY--Summer Sounds is over for the season but the Big Music Weeks of Summer continue this week with a huge lineup. There are shows in East Fairfield, Essex Junction, Milton, Montgomery, North Hero, St. Albans, and Stowe.


ART ON THE WALLS

SWANTON--Pop Up Pop In Gallery features photography by Rachel LeGrand and Sara Hayes in the temporary art gallery at 23 First Street on Thursday and Friday evening from 5 - 9 p.m.
      Two local artists will show their work each Thursday and Friday evening in the month of August. The "Pop up Pop in" space is a temporary art gallery for local artists to display and sell.
      The exhibit is free and open to the public. All are welcome to meet the artists, view the work, and have the opportunity to purchase local artwork.


ST. ALBANS--A Chair Affair reception and auction takes over Taylor Park under the big white tent on Saturday beginning at 6 p.m.
      The gorgeously hand-decorated chairs have blanketed Main Street for a few weeks. The display of all chairs and live auction includes appetizers from Chef Susan LeClair, a cash bar by 14th Star Brewing and music by Mike McCarthy.

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs hosts Paint Nite: Sunset Inukshuk on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
      Artist Hanna Kingston introduces "art to many that have never painted, and witnessing the thrill and confidence that comes from the creative process." Paint Nite will provide all the materials to create your own painting and provides "the refreshments you need!" Click here for tickets. Use code TwiggsVT for 35% off.


ST ALBANS--My solo show at the Northwestern Medical Center Gallery has just one week left to run. This exhibit includes familiar sights and waterscapes as well as a digital painting on canvas. The special offer to donate half of the sale of any image on the wall to the NMC Hospital Auxiliary must end when the show comes down. Click here for more info.

Thursday
ST. ALBANS--Durty Nelly's Irish Pub presents Kyle Noel Live in the pub on Thursday at 6 p.m. A little dust on Federal Street won't slow down these events.


STOWE--Harrison's on Main Street has string magician Will Patton and ace flatpicker Mark Struhsacker on the front porch on Thursday at 6 p.m., weather permitting.


SWANTON--The Swanton Public Library presents Storytelling around the Campfire at the Old Railroad Depot on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
      Sit around a magical fire and listen to ageless stories passed down in the oral tradition. Virginia Holiman tells the how and why of the animal world at its beginning, then touch and examine natural artifacts from Kurt Valenta's collection of skulls, teeth, bones, feathers and fur.


Thursday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents indie-folk and alt-country singer-songwriter Erin Cassels-Brown on Thursday, acoustic duo Dale and Darcy on Friday, and the rotating bandwagon of Happy Folk from Maine on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

Friday
ST. ALBANS--14th Star Brewing presents Dark Horse on Friday at 6 p.m.
      Saddle up. Bob Corbiere, bass, vocals; Bob Berger, guitar, vocals; Dan Cox, guitar, vocals; Peter Giammanco, keyboard, vocals; and Kent Blackmer, drums, vocals; bring modern country with a kick to the taproom stage.


MILTON--The Blue Rock Boys will the tent at Arrowhead Golf Course in the Friday Night Live Music and Buffet series on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
      The group features BFA's Eric Bushey, guitar, vocals, and banjo; Cliff Crosby, guitar, vocals, and harmonica; and Sabina Perkins, percussion and vocals.
      You don't have to be a member; the public is welcome. Be sure to come early, usually around 6, to make sure you get a good seat.


EAST FAIRFIELD--Northern Flyer returns to the Meeting House on the Green for Summer Evenings with Vermont Treasures on Friday at 7 p.m.       Discerning bluegrass fans take note. Regular bluegrass fans take a seat. Non-bluegrass fans should grab a reserved seat down front. The four venerable Vermont musicians, Mark Struhsacker, Andy Sacher, Kirk Lord, and Andy Greene, promise an evening of amiable virtuosity and tunes full of the punch and intensity.
      Admission for all concerts is by suggested donation of $10 per person at the door. All shows support the Meeting House Preservation Project. Refreshments will be for sale at intermission. Call 802.827.6626 to reserve seats and pay at the door.

ST. ALBANS--The Catalyst Coffee Bar brings the Mountain Carol across the Champlain on Friday at 7 p.m.
      The trance rockers have a "smooth, ethereal, and danceable sound [that is] reminiscent of a quiet, contemplative hike up a mountain trail."


Saturday
ESSEX JUNCTION--Come Party Backstage with Justice on Saturday at 9:30 p.m.
      The boys plan to "rock even the most innocent minds."


Sunday
MONTGOMERY--The monthly Celebration of Expressive Arts takes over the INN on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. The event officially includes everything but dancing, but there is always hope. Come early for dinner; service begins at 5 p.m
      This month, David Rosane is the featured musician; Ruth Walzer Shine is the featured artist; and Vermont Poet Laureate Chard DeNiord is the featured writer. The local artists, writers and musicians gather to share original and thought provoking work, curated and hosted by Bob and Becca Cummins.

Wednesday
NORTH HERO--The North Hero House welcomes singer-songwriter Carol Ann Jones in an intimate solo concert on Wednesday at 6 p.m.


CALL FOR THESPIANS

ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls will hold auditions for the fall show, An Evening of One Act Plays, this evening at 6 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
      The shows include 15 Minute Hamlet by Tom Stoppard, A Separate Peace by Tom Stoppard, and The Scheme of the Driftless Shifter by Carolyn Lane.


AUGUST-SEPTEMBER ART DEADLINES

EN PLEIN AIR PAINTING FESTIVAL AND COMPETITION (Now)--The Vermont Institute of Natural Science hosts its third annual event September 30 - October 6. It's an opportunity to paint "the remarkable beauty and diversity of the Ottauquechee River watershed ecosystem, its vibrant human and natural communities, and the important message of conservation of these forests and waterways." Registration costs $40 per adult artist.

ENVIRONMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR (September 8)--The Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management contest is open to all professional and amateur, national and international photographers of all ages. The competition encourages entries that are contemporary, creative, challenging, original and beautiful, but most of all, pictures that will inspire people around the world to start taking care of our environment. PAPERWEST (September 22)--The national works on paper juried exhibition is open to all artists (18 years and older) residing in the USA to enter up to thee original works that are either constructed from paper, or utilize a paper support. Works in book arts, collage, digital prints, drawing, painting, photography, printmaking (including monoprints) and 3D paper works are eligible.
