     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

PLAN AHEAD! SUMMER IS COMING!

SHELDON--Looking for the big show with French music from Louisiana and Quebec? Summer Music at Grace kicks off the new Summer Season with the 15th annual Farewell Reunion concert at Grace Church next Friday, May 26. This year, the popular show features Cajun fiddler David Greely and Zigue (Claude Methe and Dana Whittle) as well as a cast of thousands, thousands, I tell you.
      A $20 suggested donation supports the Tom Sustic Fund, supporting families with children in life-altering situations. Bring a dessert to share at intermission. Beverages will be provided.

ART ON THE WALLS

SWANTON--The Refuge Visitor Center hosts an Artist Reception and a talk by Maeve Kim on Friday, at 5:30 p.m. It's a chance to stop by to meet and chat with the artists who are exhibiting in the Refuge art show that kicks off on Saturday. Light refreshments will be served.


MORRISVILLE--ART100 is back with an "Everyone Wins" fundraiser.
      The unique event benefits River Arts and features an “everyone wins” raffle of original art. Admission is $100 which includes entry for two and the opportunity to take home an original, handmade work of art with a value of at least $100.


SWANTON--Art on the Refuge 2017 at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge opens Saturday and runs through July 21. The show celebrates the 24th anniversary of International Migratory Bird Day. The 2017 theme is "Helping Birds Along the Way" which highlights the importance of stopover sites such as parks, refuges, and other locations where birds pause to feed and rest en route to breeding and wintering areas.
      On exhibit are paintings, photographs and more of local breeding, wintering, and stopover areas for birds found in the Refuge.


IN THE SAC

SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council Writer's Group will meet at the Swanton Public Library this evening at 6 p.m. Call organizer Becky Rupp (802.733.7471) for more info.
      The monthly SAC meeting will plan future projects in the Swanton Free Public Library on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. New members always welcome. email for more info.


ON STAGE LIVE

Thursday
ENOSBURG--It is Movie Night at the Opera House at Enosburg Falls with a special screening of Les Miserables this evening at 7 p.m.
      Admission is free.


Thursday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--The Flower-Power Show and TNT Comedy Showcase on TNT Comedy Thursday continues on the Main Stage at 7 p.m. Doors at 6:30.
      The flowers blooming are the "intensely funny" Katie Gillespie, Sean Hunter Williams, and the winner of Vermont's Funniest Comedian 2016, Kathleen Kanz. Suzan Ambrose hosts open mic. This is a free show for mature audiences and space has been filling up quickly; call Twiggs to reserve a table.
      Next up, Twiggs presents bluesman Arthur James on Friday and acoustic duo Leno & Young on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

Friday
ST. ALBANS--It's Opening Night! at the Burrow in the Catalyst Coffee Bar on Friday at 7 p.m. The line-up includes Summer Sounds favorites Kai Jamil and Rosie Newton, plus Adrienne Cooper Smith, Entrance to Trains, Keith Rondeau Jr., Montana Russell-Greene, and WDY.
      The Burrow is "opening things up with some great jams" to raise funds for more and more shows in the coming months. The Burrow empowers the growing creative talent in St. Albans. "Our collective creed is to serve as a launchpad for humans with ideas and foster new friendships that change lives."


MORRISVILLE--Moog's Place has open mic night with Allen Church tonight at 8:30 p.m., county favorites the Starline Rhythm Boys tomorrow at 9 p.m. and more. Click here for more info.


ESSEX JUNCTION--Justice rolls into Park Place on Friday at 9:30 p.m.
      "We're 'Parkin after Dark' for round two for the year," Gary Greeno said. "Total Justification is bound to happen once again."


Saturday
STOW--The Stowe Community Church celebrates Dr. John Weaver's 80th birthday with a Gala on Saturday at 1 p.m. The music will include a recital by members of the American Guild of Organists.
      "This is a big deal," Diane Gates said.

EAST FAIRFIELD--Summer Evenings with Vermont Treasures presents internationally acclaimed singer, songwriter, and Bakersfield native Ben Patton on Saturday at 7 p.m.
      With special guests Deb Patton and Marcia Brewster, the show will be an intimate performance of the jazzy, whimsically poignant side of Mr. Patton's diverse body of work.

ST. ALBANS--The new Church Street Concert Series opens the season with the Inora Brass at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on Sunday at 3 p.m.
      The new series of classical and chamber music concerts begins with an all brass event to "celebrate the parallel between the majesty of brass music and the natural beauty of Vermont."
      With Bill Keck tuba; Lori Salimando-Porter, trombone; Chris Rivers, trumpet; Jason Whitcomb, trumpet; and Joy Worland, horn, the quintet has more than a century of experience playing "lots of kinds of music in venues all over the world": the U.S., Mexico, Canada, Japan, Italy, Austria, Sweden, Slovenia, Hong Kong, Cuba, and throughout South America. Members have played with the Nashville Symphony, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Phish, the Vermont Symphony, Itzhak Perlman, Taylor Swift, Robert Shaw, James Taylor, and Gustavo Dudamel, for five U.S. presidents, and at a farm stand, in classrooms, libraries, prisons, on beaches, on Broadway, at Carnegie Hall, and at a Jiffy Lube. Summer Sounds regulars will recognize Mr. Keck and Mr. Rivers.

SOUTH HERO--The South Hero Congregational Church hosts Bella Voce's Holst and Harp concert on Sunday at 3 p.m.
      Gustav Holst's warm music for women's voices with harp will banish even the threat of rain and chill as Spring departs. The concert will include the Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda and his evocative Two Eastern Pictures: Spring and Summer plus works by Samuel Barber, Francis Poulenc, Moses Hogan, Sir David Willcocks and the U.S. premiere of two pieces by Austrian/Vermont Composer Richard Stöhr.
      Admission is $18 for adults or $15 for students and seniors. Click here for tickets.
