     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

CALL FOR WRITERS

ALBURGH--The Alburgh Public Library offers a 13 week, college-level Writing Workshop for FREE. The course will meet every Monday at 6 p.m. beginning on March 6.
      Students will do creative writing exercises, write a short story and short memoir, read and discuss each other’s work, and learn the basic elements of plot, character, dialogue, point of view, and more.
      While the class is free to join, space is limited. Email instructor Shane R Collins or speak to librarian Gina to reserve a spot.


ART ON THE WALLS

MORRISVILLE--River Arts hosts an Artist Talk with Marie LaPre Grabon and Kathy Stark this evening at 5:30pm. The talk will be moderated by Tari Swenson of the West Branch Gallery and Helen Day Art Center.
      Their exhibit, "Glue, Paper, Scissors," uses collage, painted and drawn images for a show inspired by the landscape and figure (Ms. LaPre Grabon) that leans to the abstract with patterning and movement (Ms. Stark).

ST. ALBANS--Last chance. The color red ends its run next Tuesday as the theme at the Artist In Residence Gallery. This bright color gives the gallery a warm, lively look and feel for the coldest part of the year. features different artists each month.
      This month, the spotlight has been on the pottery of Barbara Colgrove, fabric art by Ann Levy, paintings of Patrick Murphy, and penny rugs by Sally Tarr.


IN THE SAC

SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council reminds us that Friday is the deadline for the Emerging Artist Award for seniors graduating from the Franklin Northwest Supervisory Union this year. It is also the final day for submissions for the Spring Youth Art Show.

      The deadline for the Swanton Recreation Logo Design Contest. February 28th. "Be Creative! Share your Talent! Have Fun!" All ages are invited to enter with a prize of $50 for the chosen design. Click here for more info.

Thursday
GRAND ISLE--The Vermont Humanities Council presents From Skiffs to Sail Ferries: The Story of Vermont’s Small Boat Traditions in the Grand Isle office of the Lake Champlain Basin Program This evening at 6:30pm.
      Douglas Brooks shares his stories of Vermont small boat building throughout the state. Admission is free. Click here for more info.

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents Gypsy Wind, the eclectic duo of Jesse John Potts and Andy Hoadley, on Friday and singer-songwriter Carol Ann Jones with Will Patton on steel guitar and mandolin on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

SOUTH BURLINGTON--Young Tradition Vermont welcomes Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys to Higher Ground on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Doors at 7. They'll deliver a hot two-step, then turn on a dime for an a capella ballad, then play music that sounds like Howlin' Wolf in lust with a Creole girl. It's the most Cajun music you can find. The Grammy nominated group has played together for more than a quarter century.

ST. ALBANS--NightHawk returns to the 14th Star Brewery on Saturday at 5 p.m.
      The Plattsburgh band has "something for everyone!" with Kyra Maddix, vocals; Ray Parent, guitars and vocals; Pete Lawrence, drums, and vocals; and Michael Maddix, bass and vocals.


Monday
BURLINGTON--The Burlington Irish Heritage Festival begins Monday and continues through March 24 with Irish lessons, discussions about Irish history, genealogy (everyone is Irish on March 17) and music every day including the Chieftains at the Flynn on Monday at 7:30pm.

Tuesday
BURLINGTON--Young Tradition Vermont presents a Mardi Gras Party featuring Planet Zydeco and Yankee Chank plus Katie Trautz and Alec Ellsworth in Juniper Hall at Hotel Vermont on Tuesday at 7pm.
      Burlington does Mardi Gras ON Fat Tuesday with some of New England’s most enduring and well-known Zydeco and Cajun performers, all to benefit the Tom Sustic Fund. Admission is $10. Tickets are available at www.flynntix.org.


Wednesday
JEFFERSONVILLE--The Varnum Memorial Library hosts a monthly Open Mic Night and potluck featuring music and comedy this Wednesday at 6 p.m. and on the first Wednesday of each month.
      The Cambridge Arts Council and the Smugglers' Notch Chamber of Commerce welcome all ages. Email Christy Liddy for more info.

MORRISVILLE--Moog's Place has "live music every night we're open, starting between eight and nine pm" with open mic night scheduled most Thursdays at 8:30 p.m.

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs offers Music to Dine By with relaxed music and the arts on one of three stages in the dining room, the Window, or the main stage. The Cabaret offers live performances by musicians, comedians, visual artists, poets, and more.

CREATIVE ECONOMY

ST. ALBANS--Peoples Trust Company presents a PTC Business Workshop on Digital Marketing at the bank in Franklin Park West on Wednesday, March 1, beginning at 6 p.m.
      The A to Z of Digital Marketing using social media tools and techniques can overcome the difficulty Franklin County artists have breaking out. Panelists Galen Dow, Amped Pipeline; Mitch Durfee, Grunts Move Junk; Zach Scheffler, Hike Marketing; and Ken Millman, Spike Advertising; will lead the workshop.
