AROUND THE STATE and OUR COUNTY--The 2016 Fall Open Studio will take place over two weekends, October 1-2, and October 8-9. Studios are open Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. ART ON THE WALLS
This look behind the scenes opens the doors of artists' studios across Vermont offers a self-guided tour that features the work of glassblowers, jewelers, printmakers, potters, furniture makers, weavers, ironworkers, painters, sculptors, quilt makers and wood carvers. Some 300 exhibitors are open this year, all right next to the yellow signs dotting the Vermont landscape. Several are right here in and near Franklin County.
Three artists who form a Franklin County triangle of creativity -- Barbara Colgrove, Carol Crawford, and Gail Salzman -- have studios only a few miles from each other. This weekend, Ms. Salzman invites visitors to celebrate the "Elements of the surrounding northern landscape, color, movement, pattern, texture, reflection" that are the common themes in their work. Colgrove Clayworks in Fairfield/Enosburg Falls features wheel-thrown and slab-built functional pottery for everyday use, including mugs, bowls, pitchers, ornaments, tiles, and also notecards. Ms. Crawford, a handweaver in Bakersfield offers lush pieces incorporating movement and complex patterns, elegant wearables, durable rugs, yardage, blankets and custom orders. Ms. Salzman's Studio in Fairfield will have her abstract paintings filled with vibrant color, monoprints, limited edition digital prints, drawings, and note-cards. Another Fairfax artist, Kent Scrivener of Noumena Designs Photography and Fine Art Printing, will showcase giclee prints from digital images at Ginny Joyner's Colchester studio.

RUTLAND--Chaffee Art Center presents Historical and Contemporary Political Cartoons, a semi-serious exhibit that runs through November 5. The opening Reception is at the Chaffee tomorrow evening at 5 p.m.
While casting your vote is serious business, politics are often comedy gold. Discover the humor in some of the most serious and controversial political issues our country and state have faced. Political Cartoons features contemporary cartoons by Steve Halford and John Stewart's collection of historical cartoons by William Canfield and William Crawford from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s.

ST. ALBANS--St. Albans Community Arts hosts the first SACA Arts Mixer in St. Albans City Hall this evening at 6:30 p.m. SACA NEWS
The mixers bring area artists and community members together to check out what the local arts scene has to offer. There will be refreshments.

Thursday ON STAGE LIVE
COLCHESTER--The Vermont Youth Orchestra presents the Autumn Promenade, an elegant and very "moving" fundraiser around the Elley-Long Music Center this evening beginning at 5:30 p.m.
VYO students and alumni will perform four mini-concerts spaced throughout the Elley-Long. It is a chance to experience the VYOA "in a fun new way," to get to know the students, and be inspired by the talent and dedication of the young musicians. Complimentary wine, light fare, and dessert will be provided.
Admission is $75. All proceeds from this event benefit the VYOA ensembles and community engagement programs. Click here for more info.

ST. ALBANS--The Twiggs Comedy For A Cause series continues on the Main Stage on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. The evening will raise money to support Ava Crowley.
Colin Ryan of A Stand Up Life produces the show. Admission is $20. There are just 75 seats available at the restaurant. Call Martha Brace (802.363.4787) or Email for tickets. Make dinner reservations prior to the show since only drinks, appetizers, and desserts will be served during the show.
Next up, the Bob Mackenzie Blues Trio on Friday and John Smyth, the man who awoke with a song in his head, on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.
Twiggs offers Music to Dine By with relaxed music and the arts. They have three stages with live piano, violin, or light guitar in the dining room, the Window, or the main stage. SWANTON--Justice closes down the HD Campbell barn for 2016 on Saturday, starting at a fashionably early 8 p.m. "Get there early, as you won't want to miss this one," Scott said. Doors open at 7.
Admission is $15. The event is B.Y.O.B.

WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA--This weekend, Saturday is Oktoberfest Day and Sunday the Salute to Special Olympics at the Big E, the Eastern States Exposition, which ends on Sunday. New England's Largest Agricultural Fair attracts more than one million attendees.
The Vermont Building on the Avenue of States features Vermont products, crafts, and Vermont musicians performing for guests on the weekends. Saturday brings out Pete's Posse, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. On Sunday, Young Tradition-Vermont makes it Vermont Day again with a Young Tradition Showcase featuring Sugar Snap Trio, 12 noon - 3 p.m.

BURLINGTON--The Sheraton hosts the Nobby Reed Project in the Music & Beer Tent on Sunday starting at noon. Click here for more info.

ONLINE--The Orton Family Foundation presents Engaging the Arts in Heart and Soul, a Heart & Soul Talk, as a live, call-in seminar today at 3 p.m. THE HEART OF ARTS
The arts can be a creative, meaningful, and effective way to engage residents, particularly those who might not otherwise get involved. The free 60-minute talk describes how communities come together using the arts as part of Community Heart & Soul. The presenters are Lindsay Varner, Debbie Moreno, and Vasanthi Meyette.
Ms. Varner is project director of Greater Carlisle Heart & Soul in Pennsylvania. She uses her background in oral history to inspire storytelling efforts in Carlisle. Ms. Moreno is project coordinator, Galesburg on Track in Illinois. Galesburg has tapped local artists for a portrait project, logo contest, and to expressing residents' ideas as art. Ms. Meyette was an active volunteer in her town’s Community Heart & Soul project in Essex, Vermont. It included Mobilize Essex, a community-wide arts project with more than 70 volunteers and dozens of students from six schools teamed. The mobiles represent the shared community values that emerged from Essex’s Heart & Soul project and hang for all to see at businesses and public buildings in town.

FAIRFIELD--The Bent Northrop Memorial Library invites everyone to Bid or Not to Bid? The third annual wine and cheese and silent auction takes over the library on Saturday at 6 p.m. FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF
There are more than 150 items to auction; nearly half are paintings and other forms of artwork donated by local and international artists.
FRANKLIN--Saturday is Tractor Day from 10 a.m. - noon at the Haston Library. Meet Franklin farmers and tour their tractors. Enjoy tractor t-shirt painting, crafts, smoothie bicycle and refreshments.
RICHFORD--Fall Foliage begins with the Watercolor Paint and Sip party at the Richford Country Club in a fundraiser for the A.A. Brown Library this evening at 6 p.m. Artist Annette Goyne will lead the group in the basics of water color painting and help participants paint the beauty of Vermont's fall colors.
