October is National Arts and Humanities Month. The coast-to-coast celebration shows the role arts and culture play in our daily lives in America. CELEBRATE
All around us, communities are hard at work on innovative projects that leverage local creative people and organizations for community revitalization and growth. NEFA has examples of cross-sector partnerships and successful projects.
Buy a painting or photograph or sculpture, sponsor a house concert, join a theater troupe, attend a dance, read a book, thank an artist. However you choose to show love for the arts and humanities this month, you will help recognize the contributions of the arts and cultural organizations in our community.

ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents The Nerd, a comedy by Larry Shue, in a three-day run starting this evening and running through Saturday, all at 7 p.m. THE GEEK? NO, THE NERD!
The Nerd is the story of Willum, an unassuming young architect in Terre Haute, his friends and tenants, Tansy and Axel, and the unexpected houseguest, Rick. Tansy wants to grow up to be a TV weather girl in Washington, D.C. Axel is a smart aleck drama critic who was once engaged, briefly, to Tansy. Rick had saved Willum's life in Vietnam. The play originally ran for 441 performances starring Mark Hamill and directed by Charles Nelson Reilly on Broadway.
The Opera House production stars Matt Stebbins, Esperanza Orduno, Kevin Diette, Sam Caswell, Anthony Modugno, Sarah Mitiguy, and Greg Erickson, and is directed by Suzi Hull-Parent.
American actor and playwright Larry Shue worked in repertory theater and on the New York stage and is best known for two plays, The Nerd and The Foreigner.

ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap at the Lincoln Inn presents Summer Sounds favorite Jenni Johnson and Friends this evening at 7 p.m.

STOWE--Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center presents Nobby Reed in a solo gig, "warming up for" comedian Paul Reiser on Friday at 8 p.m.
Mr. Reed is the best blues guitar handler in Vermont. He released his first solo CD to national and local critical acclaim in 1997. He plays his own music his own way
Mr. Reiser's national comedy tour highlights the funny things about life, love, and relationships. The actor has two films, 6 Miranda Drive and Concussion, premiering this fall.

PARIS--In The Garden presents mando maestro Will Patton with Clyde Stats and David Rosane at 29 rue St. Maur on Friday evening.

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents Deja Nous on the restaurant side Friday evening and Isaac and Dominic French on Saturday, both at 7 p.m.
With lead vocalist Jean-Jacques Psaute, Deja Nous performs the popular and jazz songs in the "Music Hall" tradition of French Cabaret. St. Albans natives, the brothers French have a mixed style of blues, pop, hip hop and rap.

Sunday
BARRE--The Barre Opera House presents Vermont Has Talent on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Some of the most talented young people in Vermont compete for the individual and best band prizes in this scholarship fundraiser. Singers, dancers, jugglers, pianists, tumblers and more give their all in the seventh year of performances. All proceeds from ticket sales go to fund scholarships for young women in Vermont.

BENNINGTON--Steve Gillette will offer a songwriting workshop at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. each day.
Participants will meet to share songs and discuss the craft of songwriting on both afternoons. Saturday night includes an open mic to perform new songs for each other and for the community.

ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls invites you to join the cast of this year's holiday production, A Seussified Christmas Carol. Auditions will be held Wednesday and 5:30 p.m. and next Saturday, October 24, at 1 p.m. There will be improv work and readings from the script. CALL FOR THESPIANS
The whimsical reinvention of Dickens' Christmas story has wacky rhymed couplets, zoot fruited juices, and binka bird geese.
Rehearsals will be Sundays 1-3 p.m., and Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5:30-7:30 p.m. The performances will be December 18-19.

CRAFTYS AWARDS (October 25)--The juried Craftys Awards celebrate the best in DIY and crafts, including decorative painting, felt crafts, jewelry, sticker art, knitting, fashion sewing, edible crafts and more. Entrants must upload images and descriptions of their work. Cash prizes. No entry fee. The awards event will be live streamed in November. Email or click here for more info.
DESIGN CONTEST (October 28)--Swanton Arts Council wants to help send the message of the Tyler Greeno Fund. The Fund promotes hands-on activities that support young people as they strive toward making healthy choices in their lives. Entries may be hand drawn or digitized. Winners will receive bragging rights, pizza, and a movie. Email to submit or for more info.
MEMBERS ONLY COMPETITION (November 12)--The Portrait Society of America's 11th annual Members Only competition will be by subject; members can enter all five categories: Commissioned Portrait, Non-Commissioned Portrait, Still-Life, Outside the Box, and Landscape. AROUND THE COUNTY--Teen Read Week begins Sunday and continues all next week. This year's Get Away theme spotlights all the resources and activities available at the library to read for the fun of it. FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF
The national literacy initiative began in 1998.
HIGHGATE--The Highgate Public Library sponsors Stories around the Campfire, a Halloween Family event with Mr. K and Ms. Virginia in the Highgate Municipal Park on Saturday at 7pm.
"Dress warmly and bring a blanket!" Ms. Liza said.
The Library also presents Traveling Storyteller story of Spookly the Square Pumpkin in the library on Monday at 6:15 p.m.

ST. ALBANS--Plan to go to the St. Albans Free Library this morning and just stay all day.
Mornings, Muffins & Mysteries Book Group kicks the day off this morning at 10:30 a.m. with The Poacher's Son by Paul Doiron. The Writers' Medley writers share their work with peers at 2 p.m. Each month Wanda (802.524.1507) provides a helpful prompt. Astronomy Club meets this evening at 6:45 p.m. This month includes skywatching show and tell. Bring any skywatching equipment you might have, such as binoculars or a telescope, to share your stories of observing the night sky. The club will also plan a "star party."
Tuesday brings the Scarlet Pimpernel by Emma Orczy to the Classic Readers Book Group at 6:45 p.m. A limited number of books are available at the circulation desk. New members are always welcome.
