     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

ON STAGE LIVE

SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents Carol Ann Jones in a solo show tonight at 6:30 p.m.
      The Blue Paddle has limited seating and a small bar so call ahead (802.372.4814) to assure a seat.


ST. ALBANS BAY--The Bayside Pavilion presents A&M Live in a concert tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. with Aaron Bachelder on guitar and Melinda Lussier on piano. They will play a mix of classic rock like Smoke on the Water to modern tunes like Royals by Lorde, Collective Soul as well as some originals.


ESSEX JUNCTION--It's Beads, Masks, and Balls as Justice blasts the Mardi Gras Party Backstage on Saturday at 9:30 p.m.
      The rock group metes out 70s, 80s, 90s, and current dance rock with Gary Greeno, lead vocals; Scott Belisle on bass and backup vocals; Rod Bushey, lead guitar; Mike Stella, drums; and Scott Guptill, rhythm guitar and backup vocals.


SATURDAY NIGHT and SUNDAY at the MOVIES

EAST FAIRFIELD--The Fairfield Community Center presents The Summer of Walter Hacks on February 21 at 7 p.m.
      Vermont filmmaker, storyteller, and dairy farmer George Woodard's film won the 2010 Vermont International Film Festival. It tells the story of an 11-year-old boy who faces adventure and tragedy in 1950s rural Vermont.
      This is the first in a series of six movies by Vermont filmmakers that will be shown once-a-month from now through July at the Center. All movies start at 7 p.m. Admission is by $5 suggested donation. Popcorn and cider will be served and Mr. Woodard will adttend the showing. Click here for more info.


MONTGOMERY--The Montgomery Town Library film series, Freedom & Unity: One State--Many Visions, continues Sunday at 2 p.m. The film screening and discussion series looks at our state with a six-part series of films shown every other Sunday. Part 4, Doers and Shapers this Sunday, explores Progressivism from Act 250 to civil unions in education and state law with a discussion led by Jill Mudgett.

FEBRUARY-MARCH ART DEADLINES

FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS (Now)--Cambridge Arts Council's 7th annual Festival of the Arts showcases local art galleries, artists, and musicians in Jeffersonville's sidewalk art event in August. This is a Fine Art festival. Artists can register for a 10x10 booth space (bring your own table, power and canopy). Entry fee.

NASHVILLE CHALK FESTIVAL (March 1)--The two-day street painting festival has entertainment, food, and family fun, all centered around sidewalk chalk art murals. They want artists to participate in April for lunch, Festival T-shirts, chalk, water, goodie bag, and a reception. EARTH WIND AND FIRE (March 2)--The South Shore Art Center in Cohasset, MA, invites original work within the theme for the juried show that starts in April. Open to all media. Cash prizes. Entry fee.

CREATIVE COMMUNITIES EXCHANGE (Registration is now open)--The CCX is a peer-to-peer exchange of the strategies used in successful creative economy initiatives around New England. CCX 2015 will take place in Keene, NH, a community with partnerships between the arts and business, colleges, community, local government, and Arts Alive. The Exchange offers professional development workshops for New England leaders with a hand in creative projects. Click here to register and for more info.


FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF

ENOSBURG--The Enosburgh Public Library hosts Ron Krupp, author of The Woodchuck's Return to Gardening, this evening at 6:30 p.m.
      Mr. Krupp will discuss gardening in the context of his newest book. A gardener for nearly half a century, he has worked with farms, community gardens, and gardening instruction, and is popular for farm and garden commentaries on Vermont Public Radio. His earlier books include The Woodchuck's Guide to Gardening, Lifting the Yoke: Local Solutions to America's Farm and Food Crisis.
      The Writing Discussion Group will be held on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. "Bring writing from home and be prepared to discuss it." The library hosts writing groups on the second, third, and fourth Tuesday evening each month.


FAIRFAX--Today is R.E.A.D. to a Dog day at Fairfax Community Library at 3:15 p.m. Kids ages 5-10 can read a book of their choice to a fuzzy, friend. Each slot is 15 minutes.


ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Free Library starts the day with Code to Zero by Ken Follett for Mornings, Muffins & Mysteries this morning at 10:30 a.m. and the Writers' Medley for those interested in pursuing writing and sharing work with peers this afternoon at 2 p.m.
      Classic Movie Night this evening at 6 p.m. features The Music Man. There's trouble in 1962 River City as Robert Preston, the music man, comes to town. Films are shown on the 4' by 6' screen in the upstairs conference room cinema. Admission is free, along with popcorn and beverage.

SHELDON--Local writer and coach J.P. Choquette of St. Albans comes home to the Sheldon Book Discussion group on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. She will join the February discussion of her latest mystery, Subversion. The novel tells the story of reluctant private investigator Tayt Waters who helps women in need, tracking down "abusive husbands, errant boyfriends and deadbeat dads to give them a taste of their own medicine."
      The library will have books-to-movies, local authors, best sellers, and perhaps a classic or nonfiction book this year. They plan a special event with live music this Spring. Each gathering includes a snack and lively discussion.
