An older woman in St. Albans needs a female volunteer to create music or art with or someone who wants to listen to her play. ART HELP WANTED
"She's a bright and talented woman," Franklin County Home Health's Krysten Farrell said, "who wants to increase her socialization time."
She has traveled extensively, taught, played piano and harp, and painted in oil and pastels. Now she uses a walker and moves slowly. "While her memory is not great, I believe that with time and the special activities, she would come to remember a new person and their relationship," Ms. Farrell said.
Other community members have similar needs. Some are young, many older. Some have special needs Many have interests focused on art or music or history or literature. The United Way and most agencies in Franklin County have programs to match volunteers with people in need.
This is a two-part call.

ENOSBURG FALLS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on photographer Steve Boal of Enosburg. Mr. Boal specializes in landscapes and nature. ART ON THE WALLS
"Creating art has always been a stabilizing force in my life," he said.
The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments on Sunday from 1 - 4 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of September.
Owned and operated by the artists and sponsors, the Artist in Residence cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. ST ALBANS--The Northwestern Medical Center Gallery one-woman show for Rachel Whitebear continues this month. These paintings are part of a series reflecting her work for her people. The muted tones and dream-like qualities in her work convey her experience. Ms. Whitebear has been painting for almost 60 years.
She is a native Vermonter and Native American and a Spiritual Elder for the Abenaki Nation.
The show continues through the end of September.
ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap offers Blues Night with the Nobby Reed Project tonight at 7 p.m. Vermont's best known blues trio includes Eric Belrose, percussion, Ray Bushey, bass, and Mr. Reed on lead guitar and vocals. The pub has live music lined up for every evening in September. ON STAGE LIVE

SHELDON--Summer Music at Grace concludes the 2014 season with the Missisquoi River Band in a return bluegrass concert on Friday, at 7:30 p.m.
"This is one of our favorite venues," said Cindy Weed. "Our full band plus special guests Will Patton and Neil Rossi are playing" along with Pat Murphy, Cindy Weed, and Jim Weed in a bluegrass-inspired concert traditional and original concert with strong, three-part harmonies, and innovative instrumentals.
The band has also released their first CD, Plenty of Heartaches, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Andre Maquera at West Street Digital in Fairfield.
"Enjoy MRB's rollicking bluegrassy sound in Grace's beautiful setting," Beth Crane said.

ESSEX JUNCTION--Keeghan Nolan plays the Star 92.9 Stand Up 2 Cancer at the T-Rex at Essex Cinemas (the largest screen in Vermont) tomorrow evening at 6 p.m.
The singer-songwriter and country rocker from Fairfax played the Champlain Valley Fair last week. She has opened for David Allan Coe, John Michael Montgomery, and Bucky Covington, shared the stage with Rusty Dewees, Randy Smith, and Jamie Lee Thurston, and wowed the Summer Sounds audience. Her new album, She's Countryfied, was released last week.
The American Cancer Society and SU2C present the star-studded fundraising special, which airs simultaneously on ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and cable networks. Vermont could become the state that holds the largest viewing party in the country (we're currently in third place).
Registration is $15 per person and includes a luminaria, pizza, and snacks. There will be a cash bar.
ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents the spectacular duo Jeff and Sophia on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Sophia Manning is a mother, a musician, and has a full time job but she will "sing wherever, and whenever." She came from a Spanish rock band in Florida and now fronts local bands including Identity Crisis and sings at Community Alliance Church. Jeff Shelly is a former member of Empty Pockets. Their acoustic duo covers male and female artists old and new.
"Our vocals are our signature and we promise to entertain!" he said.
Twiggs offers Music to Dine By with relaxed music and the arts. Dayve Huckett will be on the guitar in the Dining Room tomorrow evening at 7 p.m.

PLAN AHEAD--The northernmost land action of the Civil War took place in St. Albans in 1864. A Top 10 Vermont Event will commemorate the 150th Anniversary the raid September 18-21 with the music and action of the period including the Vermont Civil War Songbook and the 2nd South Carolina String Band leading a promenade.

ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Historical Society and Museum presents Archaeology of the Missisquoi Delta in the Bliss Room on Friday at 6:30 p.m. CULTURE FROM THE GROUND
Archaeologist Gemma Hudgell from the Northeast Archaeology Research Center will summarize the results of their large-scale archaeological excavations along Route 78 in Swanton. The Missisquoi flood plain setting has preserved a 7,000 year record of human occupation. September is Vermont Archaeology Month.

ALBANS--The Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese at St. Albans Free Library on Tuesday, September 9, at 7 p.m. It's a sweeping novel that moves from India to Ethiopia to an inner-city hospital in New York City over decades and generations.
