MONTH OF THE YOUNG CHILD

April is the Month of the Young Child.
One week in April has been celebrated nationally since 1971 as the Week of the Young Child. Many states and communities have expanded the celebration to the entire month of April, with a special focus each week: physical development, social-emotional development, cognitive development, and language and literacy. The arts can tie it all together in ways the kids relate to perfectly.
"Our lives, our ancestors lives, our children's lives are intertwined with the songs we sing, the tunes we play, the dances that move us," Mark Sustic said. An expert in Essential Early Education and the first coordinator of the Franklin County Early Childhood Programs, Mr. Sustic is a musician and the guiding force behind Young Tradition-Vermont.
River Garden in Brattleboro exhibits the work of the youngest artists at the 7th annual Young Children's Art Exhibit tomorrow evening at 5 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display for the month of April. New England Center for Circus Arts, also in Brattleboro, hosts World Circus Day on Saturday at 1 p.m. Kids will hang, roll, twist and twirl on the low trapezes, aerial fabrics, and balancing pipes.

ART ON THE WALLS

The new program was Special Events coordinator Kitten Ellison's idea. Their exhibit continues through the end of April.
The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery, located at 321 Main Street, is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. plus the first Sunday of each month, noon to 5 p.m.
