The St. Albans City Council appointed a new St. Albans Arts Council in 2011. The city decided an entity established by the City could focus on economic development, and promote the arts. The arts idea languished until Jim Walsh became available to chair the group. They have a six-member board and a large advisory council modeled on the hospital Board of Incorporators. CALL FOR EVERYONE, BUT PARTICULARLY SINGERS
They have started organizing a year-round community chorus. They also plan visual arts, performing arts, and written word projects.
"We are lucky enough to have Karen Casavant directing us," council chair Jim Walsh said. "Our goal for the chorus is to allow our many talented vocalists in the greater St. Albans area to perform several times a year throughout the community."
They will carol and perform at the Festival of Trees this year.
The chorus will prepare holiday tunes but Ms. Casavant is already looking forward with classics including Beautiful Dreamer and Danny Boy for St. Patricks Day. They expect to present several civil war selections as part of the entertainment for the Raid celebration next September.
The St. Albans Community Chorus meets in City Hall each Wednesday evening from 7-8 p.m.
The Advisory Board will meet next on November 7 at 6:30 in City Hall.

BURLINGTON--The Vermont Metro Gallery, Burlington City Arts' new art space, opens today on the 4th floor of the BCA Center. The commercial-style gallery will showcase and sell the work of contemporary artists from all over Vermont, in all mediums. ART ON THE WALLS
BCA will "return to their roots" with the Metro Gallery by cultivating the connection between local collectors and local artists. BCA is still seeking a small group of founding members to contribute to the growth of the new venture. Take the hint, Franklin County artists.
The grand opening reception is this evening on the Fourth Floor of the old Firehouse Gallery from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The reception will feature works by Bill Davison, John Gonter, Don Ross, and Kathleen Schneider.
ST. ALBANS--Marko ("Vermont's most popular Magician") returns to Twiggs for an hour long show this evening at 7 p.m. Only 50 tickets will be sold at $10/ticket. Dinner will be available. ON STAGE LIVE

FAIRFAX--The Country Pantry presents the busy Missisquoi River Band this evening at 7:30 p.m. The traditional and original bluegrass music group features Cindy and Jim Weed and Pat Murphy.

ST. ALBANS--ROCKtober continues in full swing as Backstreet presents the Justice Halloween show with Scott Belisle on bass and backup vocals; Todd Dunn, lead and rhythm guitar; Gary Greeno, lead vocals; Mike Stella, drums; and Scott Guptill, rhythm guitar and backup vocals all on Friday at 9:30 p.m. "All the music and mayhem you could ask for."
Come dressed in costume and win swag and prizes. Backstreet will also be celebrating Mr. Guptill's birthday that night.
ST. ALBANS--The Vermont Council on the Humanities presents Vermont and the Civil War, with Howard Coffin in Bliss Hall at the St. Albans Historical Museum on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
From Cedar Creek to Gettysburg, Vermonters were central to the Union cause. The Vermont author and Civil War historian will speak about the War and its effect on people in this state.

ST. ALBANS--The Franklin County Home Health Annual Blue Jean Ball takes place in the American Legion on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Since this is all about the arts, DJ Bobby C will provide the music and Kate and Kevin Laddison of First Step Dance will provide the dance demonstration. There will be plenty of auctioneering plus a drawing for a queen sized quilt handmade by the Home Health Quilters.
The dinner will be catered by Bob Santini, with dessert by Northwest Technical Center culinary arts students.
The casual, denim ball has a Moonlight in Vermont theme.

ST. ALBANS--Northwest Access TV presents the NW Nightmares Film Premiere at the Welden Theater on Monday at 6:30 p.m. FILM TO FRIGHTEN
The short horror films are all home grown in Vermont.
Admission is $5/person.
Twiggs will host the the NW After Party (after the films roll). It's open to everyone, but only those 21+ will be able to sample the limited edition 14th Star Northwest Nightmares brew.

WOMRATH PARK PUBLIC ART RFQ (November 1)--Professional artists living within driving distance of Philadelphia are invited to apply for a public art commission for a permanent outdoor sculpture in the Frankford section of Philadelphia. The budget is $100,000. Individual artists or teams with experience in public art projects are eligible to submit qualifications. Five finalists will each receive $1,000 for proposals. No entry fee. YOSEMITE FINE ART COMPETITION (November 16)--Yosemite Renaissance XXIX wants all media for a juried fine art competition and exhibition on the theme of Yosemite and the environment of the Sierra Nevada.
