The All Arts Council presents the Joe Levesque Big Band in the free Summer Sounds concert in Highgate Municipal Park on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. BIG, BIG BAND
Most readers know my love of big band music. I grew up on it and was pleased when Hunt's (Chico Lager's nightclub in the old armory at the corner of Pine Street and Main Street in Burlington) brought in Buddy Rich and other great swing performers.
Joe's modern big band invites dancing the evening away to standards from the Swing Era including In the Mood," "Take the A Train," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "It's Only A Paper Moon and many more.
Like Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Tommy Dorsey, and Harry James, Joe's Big Band is a large ensemble with full woodwind, trumpet, trombone and rhythm sections. They have a regular gig on the Spirit of Ethan Allen and have just finished the Bristol Summer Cabaret Series.
Right before the concert, stop by for the MAHA-Summer Sounds Social in the Park starting at 6 p.m. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends and eat finger food and delicious desserts.
The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Desorcie's Market, Drummac Septic Service, O. C. McCuin and Sons, and Ray's Extrusion Dies and Tubing.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in Highgate Municipal Park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair for the outdoor family music and festivities. The rain site is the Highgate United Methodist Church.

ST. ALBANS--The One Federal Restaurant and Lounge Thursday Night Summer Concert Series presents the Nobby Reed Project this evening at 7 p.m. The blues trio includes Eric Belrose, percussion, Ray Bushey, bass, and Highgate's own Mr. Reed on lead guitar and vocals. ON STAGE LIVE

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents Deana Paquette and Mike Trombley In The Window for the first time, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Vern Colburn is Live on the Piano in the dining room at 4:30. Dayve Huckett on guitar is In The Window on Saturday at 5 p.m.

ESSEX JUNCTION--Advertising itself as the "Ten Best Days of Summer," the Champlain Valley Fair opens on Saturday and continues through Labor Day. The Fair hosts Vermont's Music Showcase at noon and 2 in the Vermont State Building.
SOUTH HERO--Lake Champlain Islands Farm and Food Festival features the Missisquoi River Band at the Health Hero Island Farm on Sunday, 3 - 6 p.m.
Featuring Cindy Weed, stand up bass, Jim Weed, lead and rhythm guitar, and artist Pat Murphy, guitar, the MRB writes and sings many of their own songs.
The diversified agriculture festival celebrating the local agriculture with food, children's activities, interactive booths, and music. Look for demonstrations, tastings, mini-classes, storytelling, face painting, and more all afternoon. The NOFA Vermont pizza oven will turn out free hot pizza with local toppings from. INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION (August 27)--The fourth annual One Life Photo Competition offers $75,000 in prizes and more. Entry requires creation of a See.Me portfolio account and uploading of one or more photos before they release any contest details. Do not load high resolution images. "Choose your submission level." The entry fee for the "A Day in the Life" contest is $29, and for the Grand Prize is $69, a little fact hidden until after you have registered and uploaded. Click here for more info. AWARDS FOR INDIVIDUAL ARTISTS WITH CHILDREN (August 31)--The Sustainable Arts Foundation, a non-profit with a mission to provide financial awards artists and writers with children, is now accepting applications. They grant over $70,000 in unrestricted cash awards annually. No entry fee. Click here for more info.
CAR CULTURE JURIED PHOTO COMPETITION (September 2)--Cars play a central role in our global culture. This Middlebury, Vermont, exhibitor seeks photographs of "cars of any type. Abstractions of fenders, teens behind the wheel, demolition derbies, highway breakdowns, car shows and car graveyards -- the sky (and the open road) is the limit." Entry fee. MACDOWELL COLONY FELLOWSHIPS (September 15)--A Fellowship consists of exclusive use of a private studio, accommodations, an inspiring environment, and three prepared meals a day for two weeks to two months in which to do creative work. There is no cost for a Fellowship; travel funds and stipends are available to artists-in-residence based on need. Application fee. Click here for more info.

ST. ALBANS--If you Google the St. Albans Free Library you'll find more than ebooks. FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF
Google's $77,000 donation announced on Tuesday helped pay for equipment -- large computer displays, cameras, and microphones -- and training for librarians to add videoconferencing capability to connect 14 Vermont libraries to the world.
The St. Albans library has "a space that is private, that somebody could go in and close the door and do a distance job interview, for example, or a conference with a medical specialist" and became one of the 14 sites.
Former state senator, gubernatorial candidate, and now Google executive Matt Dunne announced the first-of-its-kind venture from the Norman Williams Library in Woodstock. This program tests the use of standard off-the-shelf products with tools like Facebook, Google Hangout, and Skype to video conference with other users around the country including almost anyone else with an Internet connection
The other Vermont grant recipients are the Martha Canfield Library, Arlington, Midstate Library Service Center, Berlin, Bradford Public Library, Bradford, Brooks Memorial Library, Brattleboro, Fletcher Free Library Burlington, Cobleigh Public Library, Lyndonville, Ilsley Public Library, Middlebury, Kellogg-Hubbard Library, Montpelier, Centennial Library, Morrisville, Goodrich Memorial Library, Newport, Rutland Free Library, Rutland, and Dorothy Alling Memorial Library, Williston.
State librarian Martha Reid hopes to expand the project beyond the 14 libraries. By the end of the year, 45 libraries around Vermont will have fiber optic broadband Internet service.
