MONTGOMERY--The Celebration of Expressive Arts in Montgomery Town Hall, the Grange, tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m., officially includes everything but dancing, but there is always hope. This month, the featured writer is Vermont Poet Laureate Sydney Lea. There will be an exhibit by ten artists from the Artist in Residence Co-operative Gallery. The Missisquoi River Band will perform. There will be a BBQ chicken dinner from the Snow Shoe Lodge starting at 6 pm. Grange events are BYOB.

ST. ALBANS--Cosmic Bakery & Cafe hosts a solo exhibition for the latest works of artist Angie H. Sturm. There will be an Opening Reception tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. followed by a performance by Substation 7.
Ms. Sturm will show freehand cut paper collage as well as ink and color on paper.
ST. ALBANS--The June Village Frame Shoppe & Gallery exhibit is A Digital Art Show, a collection of area artists who work in a digital environment. The gallery will host a reception tomorrow evening from 6 - 8 p.m. with refreshments served. The show continues through June 30.
The artists include Corliss Blakely, Chadwick Anthony Bourgeois, Andy Brown, Chepe Cuadra, Karen Day-Vath, Sandy Fox, Melvin Harris, Dave Russell, Michael Thomas-Adam, and John Wolff. Each artist used graphics software to create their images which were then printed on watercolor paper, photo paper, or canvas.
Ms. Blakely's favorite painting application on the iPad is ArtStudio. "With the iPhone and iPad the painting comes to life before my eyes. It's all magical to me," she wrote.
A web search for the other "Best Image Editing" applications turned up Pixelmator for the Mac, Fireworks, Paint Shop Pro, Xara Designer Pro 7, the open-source GIMP, Photoshop, Painter, and Corel PhotoPaint. Adobe's flagship program, Photoshop is one of the most used and best-known graphics programs but most users complain about the Adobe bloat and their poor customer service. Each of those programs allow the artist to "paint" with a variety of brush tools but they also allow the user to zoom in to change or blend individual dots of color.

Vector graphics programs such as Inkscape, Adobe Illustrator, and CorelDraw are popular with commercial illustrators although they also have many tools for original "painting." These programs offer some bitmap tools but make their bones with zero-loss object handling and scaling, node-editing tools text-to-path, and other capabilities for precision image manipulation. I use CorelDraw, for example, to create advertising posters for exhibits and concerts.

FAIRFAX--7th Annual Art in Bloom Festival organizer Shelly Pottala reports that the festival has now filled all vendor slots, has a new website that has already attracted two new artists, and can "make room if we need to expand" for more artists.

Clem Yonkers performs original compositions with solo electric guitar and live looping to create the sound of a multiple-artist ensemble. The music is complex, avant-garde, alternative, and layered. Click here for more info.
ESSEX JUNCTION--Lang Farm presents the Nobby Reed Project in a Benefit For Camp Takumta Saturday at 5 p.m.
Admission is $20 per person which "includes music, ambiance and a grilled entree." All proceeds will be donated to Camp Takumta. Please bring a sweet, side or snack to share. CASTLETON--Concerts on the Green presents the Will Patton Sextet in concert on Tuesday, June 19, at 7 p.m.
ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Free Library Mornings, Muffins & Mysteries this morning at 10:30 a.m. takes on Pudd'nhead Wilson by Mark Twain. The entertaining, funny, biting novel has an identity switch, a horrible crime, an eccentric detective, a suspenseful courtroom drama, and Twain's surprising, unusual solution. FRANKLIN COUNTY BOOKSHELF
Tonight is also Classic Movie Night at the St. Albans Free Library at 6 p.m. as the lives of a hobo, a waitress and a bank robber come together in a lonely roadside in the Arizona desert in 1936' The Petrified Forest. The movie stars Leslie Howard and Bette Davis with Humphrey Bogart in his first break.
The library shows a newsreel, cartoon, and trailer of coming attractions before each weekly movie. All films are shown on the 4' by 6' screen in the upstairs conference room "cinema." Admission is free, along with popcorn and a beverage.
Digital Art Secrets offers free tutorials, resources, and tips for digital artists around the world. Digital artists share blog posts with illustrations.
