Today is the Ides of March. THE IDES
Thanks to Plutarch and Shakespear, the Ides of March is best known as the date on which Julius Caesar was stabbed to death in the Roman Senate. But there's so much more.
We switched to the Gregorian calendar in 1582 but earlier day-date planners were most likely lunar based. Rather than starting with the first day of the month, the Romans began with the Nones, the Ides, and the Kalends and counted backwards. The Ides in Roman times marked the day the moon becomes full every month. That is the thirteenth day of most months, but the fifteenth day of March, May, July, and October.
We weren't able to determine by press time if a month with two full moons has a Blue Ides.
Rotary Club of St. Albans celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the Home & Recreation Exposition with free admission and the new Vermont Specialty Food and Spirits Sampler. The EXPO annual fund raiser opens tomorrow through Sunday at the Collins-Perley Sports and Fitness Center. Under the guidance of manager Rene Meilleur, 100% of the profits from go to support the local charitable work. EXPO-SING OUR HOMES
The Champlain Collection has had a major exhibit at the Home Show for several years. Photographer Chris Hungerford and other artists will have exhibits as well.
2012 marks the eighth year the Champlain Collection has published a new Fred Swan poster at the Home Expo. The Green Door portrays "a white Vermont clapboard house with what I call the 'Vermont window' and lots of flowers," Collection owner Norm Choiniere said. This year they will also have some new art tiles with popular images as well as a new black and white original drawing of a sugar house framed by D.J. Pattullo at the Village Frame Shoppe.
"The market is changing and Fred is moving with it," Mr. Choiniere said. "I think people will like it."
The new Vermont Specialty Food and Spirits Sampler will tempt your taste buds with delicious examples from around Vermont.
Significantly more home improvement will happen again this year than new home construction; that home improvement can easily help showcase your own collection of art.
Rotary supports local organizations. The Learn to Ski Program takes youngsters to Smugglers Notch. The offer annual support to programs like Martha's Kitchen and Special Olympics. They particularly like to help the start-up or expansion of local programs or facilities such as the Hard'ack snow making equipment and expansion at the St. Albans Historical Museum, Club Respite, and the Library, as well as new playground equipment in area parks. All thanks to more than $190,000 raised at the Home Expo.
Admission is free. The doors open at 2 p.m. on Friday, 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. The Collins-Perley Sports and Fitness Center is located just off I-89 at Exit 19.
SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents Carol Ann Jones tonight at 6 p.m. The Bistro's Thursday Night Music series spotlights a line-up of Vermont musicians. ON STAGE LIVE

BURLINGTON--Young Tradition Vermont presents The Musical Instruments of Ireland with Hilari Farrington and Benedict Koehler at the Fletcher Free Library as part of the Burlington Irish Heritage Festival on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Ms. Farrington and Mr. Koehler perform on Uilleann bagpipes, penny whistle, Irish harp, and button accordion. They have played and taught widely at Irish music festivals and events through the country. The event will answer the age-old question, What's the difference between Irish bagpipes and Scottish bagpipes?

SOUTH BURLINGTON--Franny O's presents Justice on Friday at 9:30 p.m. The rock band includes Gary Greeno on lead vocals; Scott Belisle on bass and backup vocals; Todd Dunn, lead and rhythm guitar; Mike Fredette, drums; and Scott Guptill, rhythm guitar and backup vocals.
Admission is free.
SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents The Croppies for St. Patrick's Day on Saturday. With Paddy Smith on bouzouki, button accordion, banjo, cittern, and vocals, Chris Gauthier on bodhran, congas, drums, guitar, and vocals, and Cheryl Kerr on fiddle, guitar, bodhran, and vocals, the group performs Irish, English, North American and contemporary songs. Their instrumental choices range from the jigs and reels of Gaelic dance to Breton melodies and the baroque-flavored compositions of O'Carolan.

SWEET! (March 19)--The multi-media show at Studio Place Arts in Barre will pay homage to edible sweets, the hard candies, chocolates, cakes, pies, and gumballs.
