SCIENCE SITE OF THE WEEK: CALL FOR ARTISTS

Shaaron Ainsworth makes the case in Science Magazine that kids who draw learn science better even if they don't draw well.
"Making drawing a key element of scientific education on a par with reading, writing, and discussion can deepen student engagement, reasoning skills, and the ability to grasp complex ideas," Science Magazine's Stewart Wills said.
"One thing we know is that scientists tend to draw themselves," Dr. Ainsworth said, "so the professional practice of is drawing."
Scientists use not only words but also diagrams, graphs, videos, photographs, and other images to make discoveries, understand their own work and explain the findings. From the inventions of Faraday and Maxwell to current representations by biologists at a microscope, scientists imagine new relations, test ideas, and elaborate their knowledge through drawings.
Students understand everything better if they can draw it. And so do the rest of us.
The full text of the article is available by subscription or single access purchase at www.sciencemag.org but a free podcast of an interview with Dr. Ainsworth can be heard here.
