AROUND THE WORLD--The Vermont Youth Orchestra Auf Wiedersehen concert at the Elley-Long Music Center on Friday at 7 p.m. begins their tour of Germany and the Czech Republic. The program will feature Copland's El Salon Mexico, a Hapsburg Dance Party, with lively dance selections by Johann Strauss Jr., Johann Brahms, and Antonin Dvorak, and Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. The VYO always seats Franklin County musicians. Music Director Designate Jeffrey Domoto will conduct.
VYO principal cellist Joshua Morris received the 2011 Hermance Prize for musical excellence at the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association annual meeting held on June 14. Mr. Morris is a home-schooled graduate from St. Albans; he plans to continue study music at Oberlin Conservatory.
The orchestra will depart for Berlin on Saturday. Their week-long tour includes concerts in Bad Schmiedeberg and Herrnut, Germany and in the Dvorak Hall of the Rudolfinum in Prague.

BURLINGTON--Music For Mankind founder Kelly Moore will sing The Star Spangled Banner when the Vermont Lake Monsters take on the Connecticut Tigers at Centennial Field on Friday at 7:05 p.m. The team and Mr. Moore will raise funds for the United Nations World Food Program and the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf.

BARRE--A Country Music Festival benefit will be held at the Barre Auditorium on Sunday at 3 - 11:30 p.m. The event is a fundraiser to help those affected by the flooding in and around central Vermont.
Well known Franklin County performers on the playbill are John Cassel, Mingo Maquera, and the Keeghan Nolan Band. Other performers from around the state are coming together including Tim Brick, the Johnny Devil Band, Rusty DeWees, Troy Austin Millette, Phil N the Blanks, Jimmy T Thurston, Wayne Warner, and more.
Admission is $10 at the door. Tickets will be sold all day. Every dollar raised will go to the Central Vermont Flood victims fund.
FAIRFAX--The Fairfax Summer Concert Series continues with the Fairfax Fletcher Westford Band on the BFA Fairfax Green in Fairfax on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
The FFW is the community band for Fairfax, Fletcher, and Westford, but players come from other towns too. The town band performs concerts all summer and one concert in December. They are always looking for new members who can range in age from elementary school students to very senior citizens.
Admission is free. Bring your blanket, lawn chairs, and family. There will be a charitable bake sale. In the case of rain the concert will be held in the middle school gym. The Fairfax Summer Concert Series is sponsored by the Vermont Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Fairfax Park and Rec, the Fairfax Community Library and BFA K-12 Enrichment.

SWANTON--The Swanton Summer Concert Series kicks of with the Nobby Reed Project on the Green on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Admission is free. Bring your blanket, lawn chairs, and family.
BURLINGTON--Red Square presents the Amida Bourbon Project on Wednesday, June 29, at 7 p.m.
The Project centers on singer/songwriter Aya Inoue, rhythm guitar and vocals; Matt Harpster; lead guitar with an ever changing cast other musicians: Jason Corbiere, drums; Jackie Buttolph, vocals; and Aaron Flinn, bass. Their music blends Americana, folk, and moody melodies to create an everday, rootsy sound.
ST. ALBANS--The Citizens Concert Band began its summer schedule last night in Swanton. They will perform next in the Edric A. Loomis Memorial Bandshell in Taylor Park in St. Albans on Wednesday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m.
The Citizens Concert Band is a great example of the struggle to keep a Town Band going without the financial support of the local community. In 1947, Ed Loomis and Lt. Col. Henry Press began a great American Legion Band with the boys coming home from World War II. They started with about 50 musicians and a $1000.00 per year appropriation from the Legion Post for music, equipment, and instruments. They drew huge crowds in Taylor Park and played events around the county that year.
The Legion dropped its sponsorship in 1948 so the band reformed in 1949 as the St. Albans Citizens Band. Unfortunately, St. Albans decided not to sponsor the band with an annual stipend so "St. Albans" was dropped from its name. The town band became the Citizens Band alone. When citizens band radios became popular they officially became Citizens Concert Band.
Today, they continue to underwrite their music with donations and small payments from area towns and organizations for the concerts.

HIGHGATE CENTER--The Highgate Public Library presents Cajun Spice with Jane Napier on Saturday at 10 a.m. There will be music, puppets, a telling of the South Louisiana version of The Three Little Pigs, and special (read spicy) Louisiana snacks.
EXORDIUM ART CAMP--The Highgate Public Library will hold the art camp at Highgate Elementary School starting Monday and continuing through July 1 at 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Ignite you child's imagination and let them discover the world of Art this summer.
This program is for ages 4-10. Space is limited. Pre-register at the library.

SUMMIT SCHOOL OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC AND CULTURE (now)--The Summit summer camp runs July 18 - 22 in Johnson, VT. Students ages 8-13 can pick from a music and dance classes with some of Vermont's best musicians and teachers, explore new instruments and new ways to make music with their body, hands, and voices, and play music independently and together. NIC Fest is the Nicolaysen Art Museum's three-day, annual community art festival that attracts more than 15,000 visitors to see the paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, jewelry, continuous live music and entertainment, a family area with activities for "kids" of all ages, a community marketplace, and much more, all organized by the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper, Wyoming.
