STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

      The St. Albans Free Library hosts The Partner by John Grisham, for Mornings, Muffins & Mysteries, today at 10:30 a.m. Then more writerly thoughts for those interested in writing as the Library continues with a writers' medley on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. It is a time of fun and sharing.

APRIL-MAY ART DEADLINES

FINAL CALL FOR YOUNG TRADITION WEEKEND SHOWCASE (Now!)--If you think it fits, it probably does. The Showcase Contest at Waterfront Park in Burlington is the focus of the annual Young Tradition Weekend. Young singers, players and dancers perform 2 or 3 numbers solo, or in duos or groups. Prizes include showcase performances at concerts and festivals (Champlain Valley Folk Festival, Dance Flurry, Festival Memoire et Racines, First Night! Burlington, New World Festival and more), cash ($1000 for 1st, $500 for 2nd, $250 for 3rd, $125 for 4th), camp scholarships, and more. There are only 20 slots available. NATIONAL CONTEMPORARY DRAWING EXHIBITION (April 22)--Purdue University Galleries juried show is open to US artists over the age of 18. They will explore conceptual and theoretical issues, push the boundaries of drawing practice, and engage in critical dialogue. Any media considered by the artist as appropriate to the contemporary practice of drawing is eligible. Work may be no larger than 8 feet tall or 10 feet wide. Entry fee. 42nd NATIONAL WATERCOLOR EXHIBITION (April 23)--California Watercolor Association will host its juried exhibit juried at the Marin Art and Garden Center in Ross, CA. Submit up to three JPG images online only. Cash and merchandise awards. Entry fee. Click here for a prospectus.


POETRY COMPETITION (April 30)--Prizes of $1,000, $250 and $100 to be awarded, in addition to publication in The Ledge Magazine. Entry fee.
