The 30th celebration Cardiac Capers -- A Collage of Capers opened with bargain night last night on the St. Albans City School stage and continues its run tonight through Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. each night. Written, produced, directed, and performed entirely by local talent, Cardiac Capers is the biennial hospital auxiliary fund-raising variety show with singing, dancing, and other performances by docs, medical staff, community volunteers, and a special performance by Tessie Bushey. Ms. Bushey has been performing since she was 14, starting with My Name's Ida and I'm Sweet as Apple Cider to being a Can-Can girl.
"You have never seen such a munchkin in your whole life," she said about this week's show. "I'm having so much fun. And our choreographer, David Chambers, should have been on Broadway."
Proceeds from the show benefit the NMC Auxiliary.
"'A Collage of Capers' will have something from every show since 1980," Director Helene Biggie said. "It's probably the funniest show we've ever done." Show numbers include I Want a Girl Just like the Girl Who Married Dear Old Dad, Ain't She Sweet, and Football Hero. The Finale is a tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces.
The entire production continues with local talent only. Eight years ago, Ms. Biggie said, they wanted to save the cost of the hired gun director and raise more money for the hospital and each show has gotten bigger and better since.
The cast of about 70 includes past performers and many new people. David Chambers, Diane Bruley, Joanne Chambers, Jeannine Tripani, and Diane Weishaar designed the choreography. Brian Fredette is handling lights and sound. Joanne and Von Rock are on sets and props. Costume chair Jan Corrigan, assistant chair Loli Berard, and the crew sews many of their costumes themselves and searches all the thrift shops. The pit orchestra is Verne Colburn, David Ducham and Chris Comstock. Michelle Ovitt is talent chair and Helene Biggie is producer-director.
"We have a wonderful raffle," Ms. Biggie said, reminding us this is a fun raiser for the NMC Auxiliary. There is a trip to a Red Sox game, $250 in cash, $150 in gas from Clarence Brown, restaurant gift certificates, maple syrup, and much more. Mike Biggie is raffle chair. Raffle tickets will be sold at the show.
Volunteers will also sell Roses for a Star as a fund-raiser. "It's a nice gesture that pleases the performers," Ms. Biggie said.
Patron tickets cost $20 each and may still be available. This special entitles you to a seat in one of the front rows where you probably will not get wet. Calling Dottie Dowling (802.524.3717) or Dolly MacNeil (802.524.1055) for patron tickets only.
Admission is $10 per person, a price that has held for a decade. General admission tickets are available at Food City, the Franklin Regional Chamber of Commerce, Hannaford Supermarket, the NMC Nursing Administration Office, St. Albans Free Library, Swanton Rexall Drugs, and at the door.
"The talent we have, we have so many beautiful singers," Ms. Bushey said. "This is the show everyone will remember!"
SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents Carol Ann Jones tonight at 7:00 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE
"The Blue Paddle is a wonderful bistro - but reservations are a good idea, there is limited seating and a small bar," Ms. Jones said. "The food and atmosphere are terrific! I can't wait for this show!"
BARRE--A Barre radio station and the Barre Opera House presents Jamie Lee Thurston with special guest the Keeghan Nolan Band on Saturday at 7 p.m. This is Ms. Nolan's final Vermont concert before she travels to Nashville.
Barre's Froggy 100.9 celebrates its 10th birthday with this live show at the Opera House. The station bought out every concert seat, so the only way to attend is to win tickets on the air. The last chance to win is Saturday, the day of the show.
The station is weak here in Franklin County but they do stream online with no delay. There has already been at least one winner from Swanton.

FERRISBURGH--The Friends of the Ferrisburgh Grange Hall host a Community Square Dance with caller Mark Sustic and Pete and Karen Sutherland on Saturday at the Town Office and Community Center at 7 p.m. Email for more info.
POST MILLS--Vermont Instruments Concert and Workshop Series presents Will Patton with Dono Schabner and Clyde Stats at Vermont School of Lutherie on Saturday. The Mandolin workshop is at 1 p.m., a Group Jazz Improv workshop at 3 p.m., and the concert at 8 p.m.

BLUE THEMED PHOTOGRAPHY (October 26)--The color blue "runs deep with symbolism. One can see and feel blue. Blue has many emotional, religious, political and even gender connotations." MUSICIANS (October 28)--Be a part of the Festival of Trees. The December Festival will have live entertainment throughout the three-day event.
Rich Rodriguez will hold open auditions for singers, individual musicians and musical groups and novelty acts at Back Inn Time next Tursday, October 28, at 7:30 p.m. Call 802.378.1738 to book a 10-minute audition time. They encourage holiday themed performances.
THE SPICE OF LIGHT (October 28)--Vermont Photo Space Gallery in Essex Junction wants to see drama through composition, color and light and images that make a viewer want to stop and spend time with them. Up to 50 photographs will be chosen for the juried show. Email or click here for more info.
INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY (October 29)--The One Life competition wants photos that tell stories in all backgrounds, styles, and perspectives.
