      Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at various restaurants around Franklin County throughout the week, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
     These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

BIG ORCHESTRA IN TOWN

      The Vermont Youth Orchestra Fall Concert takes the stage at Saint Mary's Church in St. Albans tomorrow evening at 8 p.m.
      The VYO welcomes a new Music Director and Conductor. Ronald Braunstein is a musician who teaches, a conductor in the German style, and a keystone repertoire enthusiast. Maestro Braunstein was graduated by Juilliard, has studied at Fontainebleau, at Tanglewood, and at the Salzburg Mozarteum. He studied with Herbert von Karajan for four years, as well as Seiji Ozawa, Leonard Bernstein, and Nadia Boulanger.
      The Fall Concert program includes Dvorak, Slavonic Dances, Op. 46, No. 8, J.S. Bach, Overture No. 3 in D major, BWV 1068 'Air', Bernstein, the overture from West Side Story, and Beethoven, Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67.
      Admission is just $5 for Adults/Seniors or $2 for Students. Tickets will be available at the door on the night of the performance.

      The concert will repeat at the Flynn on Sunday at 3 p.m. There will be a reception immediately following the Flynn concert to meet Maestro Braunstein. BALLROOM DANCE SOCIAL IN ST. ALBANS

     Kevin Laddison of First Step Dance will host a Ballroom Dance Social at the St. Albans Historical Museum on Friday evening. The dance social will begin at 7 p.m. with two 30-minute dance lessons to teach the basics of Swing and Foxtrot, followed by open dancing until 10 p.m.
      Admission is $15/person for the lesson and dancing, $10/person for dancing only and $10 for high school/college students. Click here for more info.

ART ON THE WALLS

     The Furchgott Sourdiffe Gallery in Shelburne presents Immersion: Recent Paintings by colorist Gail Salzman of Fairfax beginning tomorrow and continuing through October 26. The Gallery will host an opening reception tomorrow evening from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
      The exhibit includes oil paintings dealing with water as life force, as playground, as balm for body and soul.
      Gallery hours are 9:30-5:30 Tuesday through Friday and 10 - 5 on Saturday.

ON STAGE LIVE

SHELDON--Summer Music at Grace presents PossumHaw in the final concert of the season on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
      The PossumHaw quintet is an original, authentic bluegrass and folk group with award-winning songwriting and singing complemented by traditional instrumentation. They tell riveting stories surrounded by harmonizing and old-time musical arrangements. The band includes Colby Crehan, lead vocals, guitar, piano; Ryan Crehan, banjo, vocals, harmonica; Charley Eiseman, lead guitar, vocals; Pat Melvin, upright bass, vocals; and Steve Waud: mandolin, vocals. They have three albums Madtom," "Split-rail, and Fortune's Name. They have appeared in Summer Sounds as well at the Champlain Valley Folk Festival, First Night Burlington, Higher Ground, the Long Trail Festival, and more.

JOHNSON--The Vermont Symphony Orchestra Made in Vermont Music Festival Statewide Tour comes to the Dibden Center for the Arts tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m.
      The program offers the world premiere of the commission, It Is Time, by Don Jamison and includes Handel, Concerto for Harp in Bb Major, Op. 4 No. 6, Rachmaninoff, Vocalise, the Bach Flute Concerto in d minor, and Mozart, Symphony No. 29 in A Major.
      features principal players Albert Brouwer performing the flute concerto by CPE Bach, and French horn player Shelagh Abate who solos in the Rachmaninoff. Anthony Princiotti conducts.
      Admission is $24 for adults, $20 for seniors, $12 for JSC faculty and staff, $6 for Vermont State Colleges students, and $12 students at other schools. Click here for more info.

SHELBURNE--The 32nd annual Shelburne Farms Harvest Festival offers exhibits and demonstrations, children’s activities, the farmyard, hay rides, and more music than fits in a hay wagon, all on Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Look for favorites Atlantic Crossing, Fiddleheads, Jon Gailmor, the Green Mountain Cloggers, the Ed Larkin Old Time Dancers, and Mary Ann Samuels and Susan Reit, plus Haliana Burhans, the Will Dicker Boys, Gary Dulabaum, Gigi and Joni, the Highland Weavers, the Irregulars, the Heather Morris Celtic Dancers, Very Merry Theater and Matt Witten.

SNAP TO GRID (October 25)--The seventh annual UN-Juried Exhibit features digital art and photography. All entries will be printed (8.5"x11" on heavyweight paper) and arranged in a grid in the L.A. Center for Digital Art at the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery. All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. CLICK HERE: ART SITE OF THE WEEK

     "It's like a concert tour but with sketchbooks." The Sketchbook Project is creating a popular collection with a tour around the country, a permanent collection in The Brooklyn Art Library, and an online library in 2011. The site shows how to receive a sketchbook and participate in the project, choose a theme, choose a sketchbook and cover color. There is an entry fee but they offer group discounts for any group over four.
