SHELBURNE--The Shelburne Farms Harvest Festival features Fiddleheads, plus many of our favorites from Summer Sounds and other Franklin County events including Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys, Gary Dulabaum, Jon Gailmor, Stephen Gratto, Highland Weavers, MacArthur Family, Pete and Karen Sutherland, Social Band, Steel Rail, Bob and Andrea Teer, Very Merry Theater Will Dicker Boys and others at and around the Farm Barn on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Click here for more info. COLCHESTER--The Vermont Youth Philharmonia Fall Concert begins the season in the Elley-Long Music Center at Saint Michaels College on Saturday at 7 p.m. Conducted by Anne Decker, the program features works by Percy Grainger, Ned Rorem, and Dmitri Kabalevsky. VYO soloist Brianna Wood-Dunbar will perform the first movement of the Cello Concerto in E Minor, Op. 85 by Edward Elgar.

MONTH DAY, YEAR (October 1)--The City of South Burlington seeks one or more artist or artist-led teams to conceptualize and submit a site-specific artwork designed for a Veterans Memorial in the 72 acre "showcase" Dorset Park. CHILDHOOD PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION (October 2)--The Texas Photographic Society invites amateur and professional photographers to submit color or black and white digital files for the juried international photo exhibition, "Childhood." ONLINE ART COMPETITION (October 10)--This is actually a peer competition and perhaps a sales venue. The new site for artists, designers and photographers encourages artistic peers to vote on and ultimately purchase works. Artists will receive a percentage of the total sale price, not unlike a regular gallery. No entry fee. Click here for more info.
FORESTRY CENTENNIAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST (October 31)--The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation wants images that capture Vermonters working in, learning about and enjoying Vermont’s forests. The centennial celebration calls for color or black-and-white photos on disc. The contest includes the Vermonters Choice Awards and the Centennial Awards. 12TH NATIONAL JURIED ART EXHIBITION (October 31)--Baker Arts Center offers over $7,500 in cash awards for 2 and 3-dimensional Fine Art and Photography completed within the last 2 years. Call 620.624.2810, email, or click here for a prospectus and more info.
ARC SALON 6TH ANNUAL COMPETITION (October 31)--Art Renewal Center has over $48,000 in cash awards, with $10,000 Best in Show for six Categories: Figurative, Still Life, Landscape, Sculpture, Drawing and Animals. Entry fee. Click here or email for a prospectus or more info.
PAINTING STUDIO (tomorrow)--Rocky Mount Arts Center has a two year course with North Carolina painter Charles Philip Brooks for students preparing for professional careers. The cost of $1,200 per 3 month session includes studio space, weekly lectures, and critiques in the Imperial Center for the Arts and Sciences. Email for more info.
[Note from Dick]: The course may not be a fit for area students but the Franklin County would be a good site for a one- or two-year course with a noted Vermont or New England artist. Rocky Mount also has monthly Art Critiques, programs in Fabric Design and Doll Making, Handbuilding with Clay, Audition Techniques, and more.
CHIMNEY POINT--The Festival of Nations features music, films, discussions and other events to celebrate the Native American, French and Anglo history of Lake Champlain. The Festival has the Sky Blue Boys (Banjo Dan and Willy Lindner) playing on the Vermont side of the bridge to New York on Sunday at 8-10 a.m. QUADRICENTENNIAL
The family friendly event even has an atlatl championship, a sport I am reasonably sure was never played on the shores of Lake Champlain. Click here for more info.
ST. ALBANS--Champlain Collection begins an exhibit of Oren Lane photography--cityscapes and Vermont and Maine landscapes--in black-and-white and full color next Thursday, September 24, at the store. There will be a reception that evening. The photographs will remain on display for two weeks. SAVE THE DATES
ENOSBURG FALLS--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents family entertainer Jon Gailmor next Saturday, September 26, at 7 p.m.
Admission is $7 for Adults and $5 Children. Ticket are on sale at Advanced Sale Sites now and will be available at the door.
Georgina Forbes of Norwich paints layered acrylic abstract color fields that often evoke the landscape. She has exhibited paintings in the United States and in Trinidad since 1972.
