Summer Sounds drew to an official close last Sunday (oh no). But wait! There's more! BACK TO SCHOOL SALES
Scotty's Taxi presents a Young Traditions bonus concert in the free Summer Sounds series in Highgate Municipal Park on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. With step dancer Ann Whiting, fiddlers Frank Heyburn and Catherine Fortier, caller Mark Sustic on bass, members of Fiddleheads, and more, it will be an evening of roots music and dance.
Ann Whiting brings Appalachian clogging, also known as flatfooting, the percussive step dancing that accompanies old-time southern music, to the stage. Frank Heyburn is a renowned fiddler and teacher with regular appearances at concerts and dances around the state. Mark Sustic spends most of his time on "things that fall under the folk/traditional music umbrella.
"We're not exactly sure what will happen at the concert," Mr. Sustic said, "but we know it will be fun!"
Just before the concert, stop by for the All Arts-Summer Sounds Social in the Park starting at 6:30 p.m. The social hour is a chance to visit with friends and eat some delicious desserts.
The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, Desorcie's Market, Drummac Septic Service, O. C. McCuin and Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies and Tubing, and Scotty's Taxi.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in Highgate Municipal Park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities. The rain site is the Highgate United Methodist Church.
MONTGOMERY--The Montgomery Historical Society presents the 11th annual Art Show and Sale in Pratt Hall on Friday evening and Saturday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The event features a raffle for a Michael Domina watercolor and renowned local art on exhibit and for sale. It is held in conjunction with the 7th Annual Harvestfest on the Village Green. ART ON THE WALLS
MHS will host an Members Appreciation Reception and preview with refreshments on Friday at 6 p.m.
SHELDON--Ben Lanza and Jane Jarecki of Eclectic Music Productions present the second Annual Liberate Music and Arts Festival on Poor Farm Road, Friday evening through Sunday noon. Liberate has two days and nights of music featuring Ryan Montbleau Band, Nate Wilson Group, Spiritual Rez, Roots of Creation, Greyspoke, Jeff Bujak, New Deal, Orchard Lounge, Rubblebucket Orchestra, the Brew, Twiddle, Wagon, and Avi & Celia, plus yoga, camping, and organic food. ST. ALBANS--The periodic TGIF concert series presents the Burlington-based Starline Rhythm Boys in the E A Loomis Memorial Bandstand in Taylor Park on Friday at 5:30 p.m. The trio includes lead singer Danny Coane, Big Al Lemary on lead guitar, and Billy Bratcher on bass. Click here for more info.

ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn offers Sturcrazie tomorrow evening at 10 p.m. With Kevin Benedict, vocals; Brian Bissonette, drums, Rick Carnell and Gary DuCharme, guitar; Doug Ryan, bass, Sturcrazie does some originals plus classic and new rock covers. You can hear the influence from of Eric Clapton, The Doors, Santana, The Beatles, Hendrix, Moody Blues, Three Doors Down, and more.

BARRE--Randy Smith, formerly of St. Albans, is on the Bittersweet Tour, an ongoing CD release party for his new solo CD. The party wraps at Gusto's Saturday evening at 9-ish. The summer tour reunites Andre Maquera, Frank Barnes, Gary Spaulding, New England drummer Hirsh Gardner, and special guest CrashGirl.

GRAND ISLE--The Vermont State Parks presents Bread and Bones (Richard Ruane, Beth Duquette and Mitch Barron) at Grand Isle State Park on Saturday at 6 p.m. The acoustic trio performs original music with a strong traditional roots in imaginative two- and three-part harmonies over guitar and bass work. COLCHESTER--The inaugural Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival begins Monday, August 24, and continues through Sunday, August 30, at the Elley-Long Music Center in Fort Ethan Allen.
The inaugural season under Artistic Director and violinist Soovin Kim includes performances, master classes, and workshops. The Festival will feature Solo Bach works for the cello and the violin, Schubert 4-hand piano pieces and the cello quintet, Schumann lieder, and several world-premieres performed by cellist Edward Arron, Avery Fisher career grant recipient violinist Jennifer Frautschi, violist Hsin-Yun Huang, pianist Jeewon Park, clarinetist David Shifrin, pianist and conductor Ignat Solzhenitsyn, virtuoso cellist Alisa Weilerstein, Soprano Hyunah Yu, plus Composer David Ludwig.

CELL PHONE PHOTOGRAPHY (August 31)--Helen Day Art Center in Stowe will host the Relentless Eye, an exhibit of the creativity possible with the ubiquitous cell phone camera. The ten-week exhibition opens in September. Point and shoot, throw away cameras, Polaroids, or digital SLR images will not be accepted. Juried. Click here for detailed info and submission guidelines.
DREAM DEFERRED (September 18)--Purdue University Galleries will host an exhibition of contemporary art relating to the Langston Hughes poem "A Dream Deferred" and contemporary socioeconomic challenges facing minorities in the United States. The exhibition will take place conjunction with performance of "A Raisin in the Sun" at Civic Theater. All media are eligible, including new and emerging technologies. WORLDWIDE PHOTOGRAPHY GALA (September 27)--Amateur and professional photographers may submit black and white or color photographs for a juried event in Portrait, Fine Art, Landscape and Cityscape, Abstract, Digital Enhanced, and Documentary. Prizes include $5,000 cash the WPGA 2009 Photographer of the Year, plus an Humanitarian Documentary Award, and prizes for each Best in Category award. INTERNATIONAL JURIED SHOW (September 30)--The 24th Visual Arts Center of New Jersey exhibit is open to all artists in all media. Best In Show award is a $1,000 prize and lunch with the juror, Susan Kismaric of MOMA. Enter by slide or digital image. Entry fee. Email or click here for more info.
Sculptor Bruce Hathaway of Richmond works with stainless steel, aluminum, brass, steel, copper, and marble to create "lyrical figures and undulating forms [that] evoke a sense of motion in suspended animation."
