BURLINGTON--Events for Tom and the UVM Old Time Music Club Liz Carroll and John Doyle in concert in the Billings North Lounge at UVM tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE
Fiddler Liz Carroll is one of the most sought after traditional performers. She won the Senior All-Ireland Championship at 18 and has recorded and appeared in concert, on television, and on radio since. Her first solo, the 1988 Liz Carroll, was chosen for American folk music by the Library of Congress. She won a 1994 National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship as a performer and a composer for her influence on Irish music in America. Her Lost in the Loop CD, released in 2000, received an Indie Award.
John Doyle on guitar and vocals is creative, prolific, and in demand as a folk and Celtic music star. He has credits on over 60 recordings for television and film. He was a founding member of Solas and his finger-style playing and vocal harmonies can be heard on all four of Solas’ recordings. He is Joan Baez' guitarist during her concert tours.
Liz and John played for President Barack Obama at the U.S. Capitol on St. Patrick’s Day.
Admission is by donation at the door. There are no advance tickets but general seating reservations can be made by email.
The concert is the 119th presentation in the Events for Tom Series. Proceeds benefit the Tom Sustic Fund which supports families with children with cancer. Additional support provided by the Burlington Violin Shop/Vermont Violins, Messenger Print and Design, the Vermont Family Network, and others.

JOHNSON and BURLINGTON--The Vermont Youth Orchestra and the VYO Chorus present Choral Fireworks, the VYO spring concert, tomorrow evening at 8 p.m. at the Dibden Center at Johnson State College and again on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Flynn. It is a quadricentennial event.
The concerts mark the first time the one hundred fifty of Vermont's finest young instrumentalists and singers will perform together on the Flynn MainStage. They will be led by VYO music director Troy Peters and VYO choral conductor Jeffrey Buettner.
The concert will feature the world premiere of Champlain's Voyage by Troy Peters; the VYO will take that work on their tour de France in July. Expect also a diverse mix of familiar works with flair of the French. The program includes Pavane, Op. 50 by Gabriel Faure, the Song of Destiny, Op. 54, by Johannes Brahms and featuring the VYO Chorus, the Carmen Suite by Georges Bizet, and An American in Paris by George Gershwin.
Admission to the Dibden Center tomorrow evening is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors; $4 for children 12 and under, and free to JSC faculty, staff, students with ID. Tickets are available from the box office (call 802.635.1476 or by email) or at the door.

JOHNSON--Vermont Studio Center’s 25th Anniversary Celebration and Red Mill Dance features a reading by poet Galway Kinnell and performance by Peter Schumann on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., an open studio tour at 7:15 p.m., and Yankee Chank at 8:30 p.m.
Vermont Studio Center is not an art center in the traditional sense, but the Franklin County plan shares some of the same goals. The Studio Center has trained artists, held gallery exhibits, and run school programs to support Vermont’s artists and writers for 25 years. The country's largest artists' community, it serves 600 national and international artists and writers on the 30-building campus. Each month, 75 artists and writers participate in 4–12 week independent studio Residencies.
The Cajun dance band Yankee Chank features traditional instruments and specializes in the two-steps and waltzes played in the dance halls and honky-tonks of Louisiana. With Bob Naess, fiddle and vocals; Cannon Labrie, accordion and vocals; Jim Burns, guitar; and Mark Sustic, bass and percussion, they have played dances, festivals, concerts, parties, and weddings throughout New England since 1996.

BARRE--Sunday is Pete Seeger’s 90th birthday so the Old Labor Hall will host a Birthday Tribute with Jon Gailmor, Carol Hausner, Ben Koenig, Andy Pitt, Donny Osman, Jeremy Seeger, Mark Greenberg, Tom Azarian, Jaior Seguiira and Charlie Barasch on Sunday at 7 p.m. Discounts for anyone wearing red socks. The party benefits the Labor Hall Restoration.

ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn has a special recital on Monday evening at 7 p.m. (the Pub has not had music on Mondays this year) as artist and singer Meredith Roberts will sing in a recital with Jodi Albright. On Wednesday evening Eagle Country Music Night brings out the Starline Rhythm Boys at 7 p.m.

ONE-MINUTE WEIRD TALES (Right Now)--The magazine wants sharp micro-stories of 20 to 150 words, that can be presented in a quick sequence of one-screen chunks. They don’t have to be funny but they do have to be "grabbing and viciously memorable. And, of course, weird." No fee (money flows to the writer). COLLEGE SEEKS ART PROPOSALS (May 8)--Colorado State University will commission an artwork or installation that will reflect the global and environmental mission of the College of Business.
