The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents the Sixteenth Annual Talent Search on Saturday evening at the Opera House. The Junior Division and the Adult Division have been combined into a single show that opens at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. TALENT WILL OUT
One of the premiere talent events in Vermont, this show is an evening of entertainment, celebration, and the arts with the most talented performers in the area. The Talent Search is a Fall tradition that started as a fund raiser for the restoration of the now-116-year old historic landmark. Each year the competition draws some of northern Vermont's most outstanding young amateur performers who perform vocal, dance, instrumental and a variety of other stage talents. The growing number of contestants made expanding the show to two nights possible.
The two divisions in the Talent Search encompass a wide range of youthful performers. The Junior Division includes ages 5-14; the Adult Division covers ages 15-24. Significant talent pass through the Opera House doors on these nights as may local performers go on to a national stage.
The Talent Search has provided a showcase for hundreds of talented performers. The 2008 show will feature jazz, classical violinists, fiddlers, piano soloists, modern dance, flutists, and more. Prizes awarded are in cash. First Place in each division $200, Second Place $100, Third Place $75. A special Optimist Newspaper Award is also given out in both divisions.
With such a broad array of musical styles and abilities, judging a talent show can be as difficult as entering one. Each contestant competes only against him or herself. The criteria include originality or interpretation, weighted at 25% of the total, technical ability, 30%, performance and presentation, 30%, and costumes or props, 15%. The accompanist is not rated.
Admission for either night is $10 for adults, $8 for senior and students, $5 for children (age 6 to 12), and free for those under 6, There is a $30 family rate. The Second Annual Vermont Youth Orchestra Auction opens for online bidding on Monday. This year's auction features the collection of whimsical "Musical Chairs" created for the VYOA by local artists. The VYOA has also assembled sumptuous getaways, eclectic treasures, fine artwork, voice lessons, gourmet foods, and tickets to local arts events. Click here for complete auction info. Author Chris Bohjalian name a character in his next novel after one winning bidder. New Yorker cartoonist Harry Bliss has signed an original print. Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary painted a one-of-a-kind "musical chair." The auction includes tickets to the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Vermont Stage Company, and the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts.
The VYOA auction ends with a reception at the Champlain Mill on November 7.
SCHOLARSHIPS (November 21)--myartspace.com bills itself as the premier online venue for the contemporary art world. The site offers $16,000 in undergraduate and graduate art scholarships to its community members. JPEGs/videos must be uploaded to a myartspace online gallery. OCTOBER-NOVEMBER ART DEADLINES

WIPI PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION (November 1)--The Women In Photography International event is open to all photographers. Winning images with bio clips and honorable mention images will be showcased on womeninphotography.org. All subject matter and formats accepted. Founded in 1981, WIPI has become a well known non-profit organization for women photographers worldwide. Entry fee. Email or click here for more info.
AJAS 7th BIANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION (October 28)--The American Juried Art Salon 7th Juried Exhibition offers jury feedback to all artists on their entered works.
