Events for Tom presents the Young Tradition Showcase, a mid-year review of "Young Folks Doing Old Stuff" at FlynnSpace in Burlington tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. TRADITION!
Young Tradition is an annual May concert at Waterfront Park in Burlington with a series of showcase and other events throughout the year. This concert has a round up of over two dozen past and present audience favorites from the annual concert as well as some special guests. The performers will include Matt Brown, Roland Clark, Hannah Crary, Joanne Garton, Kate Frattalone, Mayfly (Katie Trautz and Julia Wayne), the McFadden School of Irish Dance, the Melbourne Fiddlers from Australia (Pria Schwall-Kearney, Sarah Davies, Jack Wilson and Claire Alleway), Jan Monteagudo-Meese, Pale Fire, Sophie Theriault, Elly Valastro and some surprises. These 25-year-olds-and-under will play, sing, and dance in folk and traditional styles. I'm not sure that Tevya will sing, though.

The concert is the 109th benefit for the Events for Tom Fund with support from Chris and Doug Campbell, Vermont Violins/Burlington Violin Shop, Smith Bell and Thompson, and the Champlain Valley Folk Festival. Media sponsorship by Roots Are Showing with Mary Collins on 93.9 WLVB FM in Morrisville. Proceeds from the concert benefit the Tom Sustic Fund, which supports families with children with cancer. Artists document the human search for meaning and identity. They use dance, digital graphics, language and literature, music, paintings, photography, sculpture, and the theater to demonstrate their findings. BACK TO SCHOOL
Since art begins with fingers swirling through colored mud or voices raised in chords, Franklin County schools have given many local artists the grounding they need to improve technique and expand a vision. We will enjoy a rich artistic heritage here only as long as residents, tourists, businesses, schools, and governments support the arts.
The four Franklin County supervisory unions have fine arts programs that cover two and three dimensional art plus concert, band, and choral music. Prose, poetry, and literature are taught as individual courses and integrated throughout the curriculum.
School buses have already burned a month's worth of fuel. In the coming weeks, we will look at the programs around the county without having to fill up even once.
COLCHESTER--Vermont Youth Philharmonia presents the Fall Concert in the Elley-Long Music Center on Saturday at 7 p.m. The Philharmonia selects young musicians from all over Vermont, including Franklin County. ON STAGE LIVE
Karl Rzasa will solo in the Weber Bassoon Concerto in F Major, Op. 75. Mr. Rzasa taught for several summers at the Reveille! Music Festival. Led by conductor Anne Decker, the program also includes the Gypsy Baron Overture by Johann Strauss Jr., the Faust Ballet by Charles Gounod, and Fanfare for the Family Farm by Vermont composer Gwyneth Walker.

ENOSBURG FALLS--Artist Harald Aksdal has donated 10 prints of his Best of Show fine art print, Sheldon Spinster, to the Artist In Residence gallery. The Artist in Residence art cooperative features works more by four dozen area artists and is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The Village Frame Shoppe is the resident framer. The gallery, located at 349 Main Street, is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
NATIONAL JURIED DRAWING SHOW (October 1)--South Shore Art Center offers $1200 in prizes for an exhibition to celebrate the diversity of drawing. KENTUCKY NATIONAL 2009 (October 1)-- The third Kentucky National will survey the most interesting trends in contemporary art with traditional and new media. It is open to all U.S. artists. URBAN LEGENDS/RURAL MYTHS (October 10)--Purdue University Galleries invite entries for a national exhibition of contemporary art that will inspire NEW myths, imagined histories and tall tales. CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS (October 15)--Monterey Peninsula College Art Gallery in California is reviewing exhibition proposals from U.S. residents in all media for the 2009-2010 academic year. Entry fee. Email for a prospectus.
Composer Erik Nielsen has made music for 30 years; his catalog includes works for chorus, orchestra, wind ensemble, and solo instruments, as well as chamber music and electronic music.
