It is a busy weekend in Montgomery with the annual Art Show and Sale, Harvest Fest, and a Community Block Party.
We survived a rainy season and finished the season with one of our best concerts ever on as nice a summer night as we've had this year. Tammy Fletcher gave the best show we've ever seen. SUMMER SOUNDS
Did you miss any of the concerts? The rain did keep a number of people away. Fortunately, Northwest Access TV and the All Arts Council produce Almost Live, a series of live concerts that airs each week on Comcast Channel 15. One set of Herkel Almost Live airs this Saturday at 2 a.m., 3 p.m., and 11 p.m. on Channel 15. Herkel appeared in an afternoon Bay Day concert at St. Albans Bay.

The Summer Sounds concerts were sponsored this year by the Town of Highgate and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, Desorcie's Market, Drummac Septic Service, O. C. McCuin & Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies & Tubing, Scotty's Taxi, and Stewart Title Guaranty Company.
The community based All Arts Council brings all types of arts to northwestern Vermont. The concert series will return next summer, always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in a Town Park, and always free.
HIGHGATE--Buy local! The Highgate Farm Market will continue into the Fall with fresh fruits and vegetables, some craft items, and even bakery sweets, all in the Municipal Park on Fridays, 3-6 p.m. and Sundays, 6-8 p.m. The Farm Market was our the host on Summer Sounds Sundays.
MONTGOMERY CENTER--The Montgomery Historic Society presents its 10th annual Art Show and Sale in historic Pratt Hall this weekend. The event is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. The MHS will hold a Member Appreciation Reception with the artists tomorrow evening at 6 p.m. ART ON THE WALLS
The Art Show and Sale features Vermont artists in a variety of media including Glen Bartolomeo, Tim Chapin, Lenny Christopher, Suzanne Dollois, Pam Fischer, Annette Goyne, Janis Hess, Heidi Lague, George Lochtie, Robin Massey, Beth McAdams, Lorraine Pike, Julie Ruth, John Selmer, Sr., and Gustav Verderber.
"We have about 50-50 painters and photographers," organizer Noella McGroarty said.
The Village Green also show includes the Covered Bridges Garden Club's annual Harvest Fest on Saturday only with plants and produce from local gardens and nurseries, homemade foods and handmade crafts, trinkets and treasures, and handcrafted raffle items.
ESSEX JUNCTION--"Summer's Last Blast," the Champlain Valley Fair places a strong emphasis on Vermont talent with the Fine Art Gallery each year. The Fine Art Gallery and Craft Show offers the best of the best in local art, paintings, photography and fine crafts in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion. The Fair begins Saturday.
An Arts Reception offers the chance to meet the art show winners on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
ST. ALBANS--Jim Branca and the Mystic Mojo Trio play at the Elks Club this evening from 5 to 8 p.m. in a fundraiser, BBQ, and raffle for the Greyhound Adoption League. Click here for more info. ON STAGE LIVE
SUMMER MUSIC AT GRACE--The Adirondack Harper, Martha Gallagher, comes to the popular series at Grace Church Sheldon tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. This concert will feature Celtic harp music played with a sense of joy and stories that weave the songs together.
Singer, songwriter, and HARPER Martha Gallagher will play her own original music inspired by waters, family, and friends from her Adirondack home as well as headstone inscriptions, which "she sees as beautiful expressions of the human heart." She has performed with The Chieftains and has toured the US and Canada extensively. She was a member of a symphony orchestra, the lead singer in a rock band and a jazz/blues band. Ms. Gallagher is a National Endowment for the Arts solo artist. She has recently appeared on BBC Television, Northeast Public Radio, and Good Morning Arizona. Did I mention that she is a harper?
A community potluck supper precedes the concert at 6 p.m. Grace Church is located at 215 Pleasant Street, Sheldon. Suggested admission at the door is $10. ESSEX JUNCTION--The Champlain Valley Fair emphasis on Vermont musical talent brings ten local performers to the Vermont State Building, one per day for three daily performances at 2:30, 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Those free concerts begin with the Yandells on Saturday and finish up with Keeghan Nolan on Labor Day.
This week, the music lineup includes Duncan and David Yandell of Williston who will play Cape Breton style Fiddle and Piano on Saturday. The Vermont based band Prana with acoustic guitarist and lead singer Paul Polz appears on Sunday. High Energy Celtic Rock band Pale Fire plays Monday. Tom & Lori bring play a mix of acoustic rock, folk and contemporary songs they like to refer to as "music for grownups" to the stage on Tuesday. And CrossRoad combines Contemporary Christian Rock with Contemporary Worship music on Wednesday. The concerts continue next week.
The U.S. Marine Corps Band will play a free concert next Thursday, August 28. The Fair admission includes this free concert but you must have a grandstand ticket. Free reserved seat tickets are available now at all Maplefields stores.
There is also an opportunity to meet Curly the Cow but I have been reliably informed that Batman will not ride Curly although they will both be in Expo South.
MONTGOMERY CENTER--The Montgomery Community Block Party presents the Starline Rhythm Boys for the second year in a row on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Recreation Field. The Boys include singer and rhythmic foundation Danny Coane, songwriter Billy Bratcher on upright bass, and Al Lemery on guitar and harmony vocals.

ST. ALBANS--The St. Albans Concert Series presents the Nobby Reed Project in concert in the Edric A. Loomis Memorial Band Shell on Sunday at 6 p.m. The Project, with Eric Belrose, percussion, Ray Bushey, bass, and Mr. Reed on lead guitar and vocals, plays original blues in the soul-shakin'-electric Texas and Chicago styles. THE ART OF ACTION: SHAPING VERMONT'S FUTURE THROUGH ART (August 28)--Vermont entrepreneur and philanthropist Lyman Orton has underwritten a Vermont Arts Council commission for two-dimensional works of art that articulate Vermont’s social, political, environmental, and economic future and inspire people to take action.
