Bay Day 2008 kicks off a day with lots more than fireworks. The 29th annual summer festival offers a full family day with the Great Race, lakefront games, sports, fair food, fireworks, and continuous live music, all to celebrate Independence Day. This familiar Franklin County family festival has new surprises every year. SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY HERE!
Bay Day 2008 takes place in St. Albans Town Bay Park all day this Sunday. AccuWeather promises that Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high of 80° and that the skies will remain mainly clear all night.
SUMMER SOUNDS--St. Albans Bay Park welcomes back a band that rocked the Pavilion as Stewart Title Guaranty presents the Rumble Doll Independence Day tribute in the Summer Sounds series at Bay Day on Sunday evening. It's an evening of "a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll."
The country-pop band Rumble Doll is centered on Ryan Malroux and McKenna Lee. The singer-songwriter duo came from two different worlds. Ms. Lee has small town Louisiana roots and Los Angeles drive. Mr. Malroux brings Burlington attitude to his wanderlust. That combination lets them bring a mix of first-hand experience and outside influence to all the music they write.
The duo is backed by Gary Spaulding, drums, and Aram Bedrosian, bass. The Rumble Doll CD, Another Fine Undefined Life is tender, bold, angry, and sweet, with songs that evoke the familiarity and camaraderie of human feelings. It is available at for $9.99. 7 p.m. on the Bathhouse patio.
The Summer Sounds concerts are sponsored by the Town of St. Albans and the All Arts Council, and underwritten by Chevalier Drilling, Desorcie's Market, O. C. McCuin & Sons, Ray's Extrusion Dies & Tubing, and Scotty's Taxi.
The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont. The concerts are always on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m., always in a town park, and always free. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair as you settle in to enjoy outdoor family music and festivities.
LIVE MUSIC ALL AFTERNOON--the Town of St. Albans will offer live music for Bay Day starting about 2 p.m. on the back stage at St. Albans Town Park at the Bay.

With four Scotts and a Taylor, Fractured seems a pretty well-woven tartan. Look for Krista Taylor, vocals; plus (alphabetically) Scott Belisle, bass; Scott Guptill, high energy guitar; Scott Milne, guitar; and Scott Mercure, drums. They will play the Colchester 4th of July Parade tomorrow and have regular appearances at Backstage, Night Crawlers, and Shooter’s. 2 p.m. on the Bathhouse stage.
Mike Lykens' band Herkel plays classic rock and blues with Mr. Lykens, guitar and vocals, Mike Willey, bass and vocals, Brian Wiggins, keyboards and vocals, and Matt Nerbak, drums and vocals. "We do a good mix of newer and classic stuff," Mr. Lykens. "Everybody will recognize our faces." And the music. 5 p.m. on the Bathhouse stage.
The family events include the great race, volleyball and horseshoe tournaments, food and games for all ages, and more all starting at 1 p.m.
The Bay Day-Summer Sounds social, presented by St. Albans Town Recreation, will be an all day event with the Bay Day food vendors starting to serve at about 2 p.m.
Fireworks will begin at dusk thanks to generous contributions from the community. The fireworks alone have a rain date, July 8.
ENOSBURG FALLS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on Nancy Hayden, mixed media, Pat Murphy, paintings, Pam Krout Voss, fiber arts, Jo Anne Wazny, fine art photography. There is an Artist Reception with refreshments this evening, 5-8 p.m. at the Gallery. The exhibit continues through the month of July. ART ON THE WALLS
The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 45 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery, located at 349 Main Street, is open Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
ST ALBANS--The Northwestern Medical Center Gallery hosts photographer Emily Dunsmore of St. Albans this month. Ms. Dunsmore is exhibiting mostly black-and-white landscape images including Acadia National Park. The one color image is of Mount Mansfield, taken in the rear view mirror of her car. She works at Northwest Occupational Health.
The show continues through the end of July.
ENOSBURG FALLS (Really)--Summer Music at Grace and the Opera House at Enosburg Falls have joined forces for a very special concert in the Opera House on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ON STAGE LIVE
The Saline (Michigan) Fiddlers have grown from an unusual public school music program. This tour, City Lights and Music-Filled Nights! includes the traditions of American folk fiddle, bluegrass, jazz, western swing and Celtic music song and dance. The tour takes them to NJ, NY, MA, ME, and OH. The group is headed by Artistic Director Ben Culver who composes or arranges much of their repertoire. The Cloggers are choreographed by Sheila Graziano.
From its beginnings as an instrumental ensemble, Saline Fiddlers has introduced fine singing voices as well as the Fiddlers Cloggers. The group has made more than 1000 performances all over the United States and abroad. They have performed three times at the White House, twice at the Kennedy Center, and at the State of Michigan's Presidential Inaugural Ball in 2001. Their latest (and eighth) CD is On My Way Home.
The performers are all students at Saline High School in Michigan. Their year round schedule averages 80 concerts each year.
This is the Saline Fiddlers' second trip to Franklin County; they played Grace Church in 2004 and needed a larger venue this year. The teen Fiddlers also need housing. If anyone can help by housing two or more members of the group for one night, July 8, call Beth Crane (326-4603).
Admission is $12, or $10 for seniors and students, and $5 for children under 12. Tickets are available at the door. A potluck supper preceded the concert at 6 p.m. Click here for more info about the group and click here for more info about the Summer Music at Grace series.
