STATEWIDE--Planning to staycation this summer? This weekend, Vermont Days celebrates the arrival of summer with temps in the high 70s and wall-to-wall sunshine. Cultural resources across the state have big doings. All Vermont State Park day areas, state-owned historic sites, and the Vermont Historical Society Museum in Montpelier will be open at no charge. JOHNSON--The Northeast Heritage Music Camp begins Sunday with a week of instruction by world class players of traditional music at Johnson State College. The camp features Alice Berube, Seamus Connolly, Dwayne Cote, Sarah Hotchkiss, Alan Jabbour, Cindy Kallet, David Kaynor, Peter Langston, Grey Larsen, Daniel Lemieux, Jeremiah McLane, Ken Perlman, and Pete Sutherland. ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn presents the Nobby Reed Project in the WCLX Blues night tonight at 7 p.m. There is music every night at the Inn.

HIGHGATE CENTER--The Highgate United Methodist will host Hot Dogs and Beans on the Lawn tomorrow evening at 6:30 p.m. The light supper includes a special performance by the Champlain Voices.

RICHMOND--Artist and singer Meredith Roberts will sing in a recital by Dr. Bill Reed's students Sunday, on Fathers Day, at the Richmond Community Center. The younger students start at 4 p.m.; the adult students sing at 5:30 p.m.
Dr. Reed teaches classical, theatrical, pop/rock, and folk singers, for school, conservatory and community theater company roles as well as professional opera, concert, and theatrical roles.
JEFFERSONVILLE--The Village Tavern hosts Open Mic at 8 p.m. on Thursdays.
FAIRFAX--The regular Music Session continues Saturday with acoustic instrumentalists playing traditional songs at the Foothills Bakery, 1-4:30 p.m. Admission is free by donation.
ST. ALBANS--Chow Bella offers the jazz and improv of Vern Colburn on the Piano on Fridays at 5:30 and dynamite jazz duo of Ted Crosby and Fabian Rainville at 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Call 802.524.1405 or click here for more info.

A Tribute to the Music of Elvis Presley began at the Vergennes Opera House, Hardwick Town House, Catamount Arts Center, and the College of St. Joseph in Rutland. The tour played the Opera House at Enosburg Falls last this month and continued at Chandler Music Hall and the Haskell Opera House. It concludes at FlynnSpace, on Saturday.
I have encouraged Mr. Shelton and other artists to do "Opera House" tours. The restored opera houses across Vermont are magnificent venues with appreciative audiences. He is doing all the right stuff: he sends press info to every likely outlet from ABC22 and the Addison Eagle to the St. Albans Messenger to WVLB. He has an email mailing list. He has an up-to-date website. He sends posters out. He uses church bulletins and word of mouth.
I'm glad that it is working out. This particular tour has no cash sponsors yet but Mr. Shelton said, "We are making enough in ticket sales and merchandise to pay the bills."
In case you missed the plug, Tribute to the Music of Elvis Presley is one night only at the FlynnSpace in Burlington. Mr. Shelton sings the music of Elvis Presley, Perry Como, Bobby Darin, Neil Diamond, Rick Nelson, Roy Orbison, Andy Williams, and more with "nightscaped" sets, dancers, lights and special effects. The first half includes the crooning songs in an old school, classy performance. After intermission, Mr. Shelton does a compete program of Elvis Presley. Admission is $15 at the door or $10 in advance at captainradical.com.

SOUTH BURLINGTON--The Vermont Youth Orchestra Association hosts its annual lawn sale this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at 1720 Spear Street. The treasures on sale benefit the VYOA. ART ON THE WALLS

CHAIR PAINTING (now)--The VYOA needs artists for the Musical Chairs November fundraiser. This call is for donations of "music inspired," one-of-a-kind, embellished or decorated chairs. Artists in all mediums are encouraged to participate. All proceeds from the sale of the musical chairs will directly benefit the programs of the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association, including orchestras, choruses and music camps. JUNE ART DEADLINES

FANTASY CALL (June 16)--Graphic artists can fight the summer doldrums by designing a poster for Fantasy Fest 2008 in Key West. No trip is not included but with the $1,000 winner's purse, you can (almost) fly there. Work on the theme "Pirates, Pundits, and Political Party Animals." EXPOSURE (June 17)--The nationwide open call for photography from Artists Wanted is part of a collaborative project by New York City creative groups and artists. The project seeks new opportunities for emerging talent.
The photographers will be juried for a Grand Prize, a Student Award, and an Educator's Grant. There will also a People's Choice Award. The grand prize includes a photo show on buildings in New York City Art Districts of Chelsea, Dumbo and Williamsburg, featured at an Opening Event at the Leo Kesting Gallery, a promotional campaign, and a $2,008 cash award. SCULPTURE COMPETITION (June 30)--Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida, wants North American sculptors for its annual public art exhibition beginning in September. Three artists will be selected to exhibit 4-5 works each (depending on size). Each artist will receive a $5,000 honorarium. Only completed, maintenance-free works will be considered. Singer/songwriter and comedian Nathan Caswell lives in Burlington, although not by birth; he chose love over health care and immigrated from Canada in 2002. He takes a quirky style to festivals, clubs, and college venues. He has recorded and released two independent records.
