Public art makes educational sense.
Students in the Open Doors summer program completed a mural on the wall of Mimmo’s Pizzeria in St. Albans recently. Students researched Italy then designed and painted the concrete outside wall of the South Main Street business. The artists included Samantha Allen, Leah Anderson, Rebekah Anderson, Chris Baden, Curtis Brown, George Dowhen, Breanna Dupuis, Amber Dutkeiwicz, Cheyanne Fitzpatrick, Ariana Gosselin, Sammy Goyette, Frankie Guitard, Casey Jacques, Dylan Lawton, Catherine Markle, Ryan Marrier, Anthony Reed, Mariah Rocheleau, Brooke Spence, Megan Spence, Haley Spillane, and Michael Warren, all from St. Albans. St. Albans Town Educational Center art teacher Amanda Parker directed the project.
Mimmo’s paid for materials. The mural project received a Vermont Department of Education grant in partnership with the Nellie Mae Foundation for the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program.
Other pieces of Franklin County public art include Sunfix for Judy, a Kate Pond sculpture at the Border Station at Highgate Springs, the Stone Canoe sculptures and Dam Warnings in Swanton, plus a series of murals in Fairfield, St Albans, and Swanton commissioned by the Franklin County Caring Community committees as well as the Houghton Park skateboard painting, walls at Northwestern Medical Center and People’s Trust Company, the railroad-themed trash can liners in Taylor Park, and the St. Albans City Pool.
ARTISTS--The Staart Gallery plans a series of figure drawing sessions on Wednesday nights from 7-9 pm. "I would like to schedule six weeks of sessions starting in the next couple of weeks," Stina Plant said. ALL THE CALLS
"I've lined up an experienced male model," Ms. Plant said. For the record, I am not the male model. The resources include a human anatomy for artists reference book as well as instruction from Stina Plant for those who have never done this before.
There will be a small per session fee of $5 to pay for the model. Bring your own materials.

THESPIANS--The Fairfax Community Theater Company will hold auditions for the first FCTC holiday show, An O. Henry Christmas. Auditions will be held from 7-9 p.m. on October 16-18 at Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax and will consist of readings from the script.
An O. Henry Christmas. a performance of two O. Henry one-acts, The Cop and the Anthem and The Gift of the Magi is scheduled for December 6-9. Call 802.849.2923, email, or click here for more info.
WRITERS--Kasini House presents Art Writing for Artists and Art Lovers a four evening workshop. beginning October 17 on four Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Art Writing for Artists and Art Lovers is for those who wish to develop skills to communicate about their work and for those who wish to explore art through writing. Writing about art means using language to effectively communicate visual experience which can be deeply emotional or intellectual. For writers in general, mastering art writing will inform how one creates fiction or reports on the world around them. Through a combination of group discussion, writing exercises, and art viewing, this workshop will help participants develop skills to write about art. It's also a leg up to writing a column like this one.
Instructor Ric Kasini Kadour is the former Vermont Editor of Art New England, co-author of the Vermont Art Guide, and publisher of Art Map Burlington.

ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn offers some favorites this week. The Nobby Reed Project plays the WCLX Blues Night tonight at 7 p.m., the Starline Rhythm Boys begin tomorrow evening at 9 p.m., RumbleDoll will rock the house at 9 p.m. on Saturday, and Bob Degree will host the Bluegrass Jam at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

ON THE AIR--Almost Live, the one-hour local music showcase, on Channel 15 offers Jim Branca and the Mystic Mojo Band at Summer Sounds, tonight at 9:30.
FAIRFAX--The regular Music Session continues Saturday with acoustic instrumentalists playing traditional songs at the Foothills Bakery, 1-4:30 p.m. Admission is free by donation.
WATERVILLE--Cambridge Arts Council presents a new series of four community dances at the Waterville Town Hall starting Saturday at 7 p.m. (The series continues November 10, January 12, and April 12).
Mark Sustic will call and give dance instruction. Frank Heyburn and Michele Lajoie provide the music with a variety of youth fiddlers, including members of Fiddleheads. Musicians with acoustic instruments are welcome to join in with the band. They will play and teach contras, squares, circles, play parties and singing games. Bring a partner, a family, or come alone. No prior experience is needed; absolute beginners are welcome.

More than 7,500 sites across the country have the lights on after school this month to remind us that after-school programming is key to the success of our school children. Eight Franklin County programs will host events this week and next for the Eighth annual Lights On After-school celebration. Most involve the arts in one form or another. LIGHTS ON
On Monday, the Highgate Crossroads program Open House at the Elementary School will include overhead art creations plus tours, a Yu-Gi-Oh challenge, jump in demonstrations, and stamping fun. 3:30-5:00 p.m.
On Wednesday, Sheldon Elementary School's ASPEN Open House, will feature tours, demonstrations, Odyssey of the Mind challenges, refreshments and more. 3:15-4:45 p.m
Also on Wednesday, the Richford after-school program will hold demonstrations during their community Open House at the Richford Jr/Sr High School. Light refreshments will be available. 4:00-5:00 p.m.
The Vermont Music Library and Shop holds over 3,000 recordings of commercial releases and live concerts by Vermonters. All 3,000 are available for listening. VMLS is staffed by volunteer high school and college students. The site also includes an online store with about 500 titles including many from Franklin County available for purchase.
