The Vermont Youth Orchestra presents a concert finale of piccolo repertoire at Elley-Long Music Center on Saturday at 8 p.m. Piccolo Picks features performances by international piccoloist and teacher Dr. Christine Beard, accompanied by pianist Paula Ennis, VYO piccoloist Armando Veve, the Vermont Youth Orchestra, and the Project Piccolo Rebirth Wind Ensemble. The program will include prominent works within the piccolo repertoire including the premiere of Echos: Prelude and Dance, a new composition for piccolo and piano by Todd Goodman. PICCOLO PICKS
Dr. Beard has performed worldwide on both the piccolo and the flute as a soloist, chamber musician and as part of an orchestra. She was the featured piccolo soloist at the International Wind Music History Symposium and Vintage Brass Band Festival in Northfield, Minnesota. Her concert debut came with the Mineralnye Vody Festival Orchestra in Russia. Her arrangements and composition for both flute and piccolo been performed throughout the United States and Europe. She founded and directs the Heartland Community Flute Choir in Omaha and teaches applied flute and chamber music at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Flutist and piccolo player Armando Veve of South Burlington has been a member of the VYO since he was in the sixth grade. He soloed in the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s Go For Baroque Youth Concert at the Flynn earlier this month. He has also performed with the Heritage Festivals of Gold Honor Orchestra at Boston Symphony Hall and the All New England Orchestra.
The Project Piccolo Rebirth Wind Ensemble was created specifically for this festival with members from BFA St. Albans, South Burlington HS and the VYO, and is conducted by Eric Bushey. They will perform the Wren Polka, The Two Little Bullfinches (also a Polka) and the latin-jazz flavored Dance of the Southern Lights. The Dance piece round outs the program by showing a contemporary use of the piccolo as a solo instrument.
Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students/seniors/children. Tickets available at the door only.
The Events for Tom Series presents Anais Mitchell in celebration of the release of her debut recording the brightness in the Showcase Lounge at Higher Ground on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The brightness producer Michael Chorney will open and also perform with Ms. Mitchell. Other guest musicians include Ben Campbell. BRIGHT AND SHINING
The Vermont native grew up on a sheep farm in Addison County. She makes small-sounding, big-thinking folk albums that play like a front-porch serenade and has been playing the underground folk scene since 2002. She started writing songs at age 17 and started performing them live during her school days. She made several trips to the Middle East, and also spent time in Europe and Latin America, studying languages and world politics. This stunning, troubadour-like experience seeped into her music, and she became adept at fusing her passion for literature and journalism in her lyrics.

The concert is the 58th presentation in the Events for Tom Series. Proceeds from the concert benefit the Tom Sustic Fund, which supports families with children with cancer. JERICHO--The Vermont Music Educator's Association Northwest District 1 Music Festival takes place at Mount Mansfield High School tomorrow at 7 p.m. The concert features the Festival High School Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Scholarship Winners, and the Festival Middle School Honors Chorus. The Northwest district includes all Franklin County middle and high schools, the Islands schools, plus Milton High School and MMU in Chittenden County.

HUNTINGTON--The Huntington and Richmond Community String Collective hosts a Family Contra Dance with caller Mark Sustic and the String Collective (Katie Trautz, Julia Wayne and others) on Saturday from 6 - 7:30 p.m. for family dances and 7:30 - 9 p.m. for faster paced dances in the community space at the Huntington Public Library. Awareness Theater director Emily Anderson of Winooski was formerly a puppeteer with The Bread and Puppet Theater. Her VSA Arts Vermont Awareness Theater is devoted to empowering populations who have no voice in "mainstream society" to express their serious and lighthearted viewpoints in a theatrical setting.
