The All Arts Council opens the 2007 Concerts for Grumpy Grownups season with the Vermont Youth Orchestra winter concert, The Force of Destiny, next Friday, January 26, at St. Mary’s Church in Saint Albans. Led by Music Director and Conductor Troy Peters, the VYO program offers powerful and thoughtful music built upon varying themes of fate. James Box, principal trombonist for the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, will join the VYO to perform Grondahl’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. BONED DESTINY
The program includes the unforgettable Force of Destiny Overture written by Verdi in 1862. Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony intersperses themes of melancholia with glimmers of hope for life’s joy. Lament, written by former Middlebury Music Professor James Grant, is a musical meditation on daily challenges and emotions.
"James Box is one of the most exciting trombonists in North America today," Maestro Peters said. "His playing beautifully balances elegant refinement with raw, unbridled power. He is, in a word, amazing."
A native of Ripley, Tennessee, Mr. Box has been the principal trombonist for the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal since 2001. Prior to his position with the Montréal Symphony, he was principal trombone of the Canton Symphony Orchestra in Ohio and principal trombone of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra in West Virginia. He was also the principal trombonist for the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and the Orquesta Sinfonica de Nuevo Leon, Mexico.
The Vermont Youth Orchestra offers three performances each season at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and one in Franklin County.
The Concerts for Grumpy Grownups series is sponsored by the All Arts Council with the ongoing support of the St Albans Messenger. The VYO 2006-07 Season is sponsored by Champlain Orthodontic Associates, LTD. This concert is sponsored by Dr. Albert Hardy, DMD, and by the All Arts Council. Admission to the St. Mary's concert is $8 for Adults, $6 for Seniors, and $4 for Students and Children. Tickets are available at the All Arts ticket centers--Enosburg Pharmacy and Merchants Bank in Enosburg Falls, at Swanton Rexall, at Better Planet in St. Albans--and at the door. Note that this concert was originally planned for Missisquoi Valley Union High School but a scheduling glitch occurred.
The Force of Destiny will be repeated at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, January 28, at 3 p.m.

ART'S ALIVE (January 22)--The All Arts Council will join with Art's Alive for a Franklin County group show at Union Station in Burlington in March. The space will hold a total 20 to 50 pieces. This call is for a group of Franklin County artists only. Artists will have to label and hang their own work, but the exhibitors have s-clips and string. Email the All Arts Council for more info. NATIONAL PAINTING, DRAWING & PRINTMAKING COMPETITION (January 26)--The Palm Beach Community College juried competition offers $2,000 in awards. Entry fee. Email or click here for the prospectus. Lake Worth, Florida, is very nice at this time of year.

SUMMER RESIDENCY (February 5)--The Blue Sky Project Artist-In-Residence program combines practicing artists for collaboration with teens and an addition of artistic breadth and depth to McHenry County. About 60 miles from downtown Chicago, the eight week residency begins in mid-June and offers a $6,000 stipend. Click here for more info.
21st ROSEN OUTDOOR SCULPTURE COMPETITION AND EXHIBITION (February 9)--The competition will place ten new sculptures on the campus of Appalachian State University. Works are selected from two categories: completed and site-specific. The competition is open to sculptors who are over the age of 18 and currently residing in the US. Awards and Honoraria plus installation assistance, full color catalog, corporate sales, and a residency program. The Rosen is a part of An Appalachian Summer Festival - a multi-arts festival featuring music, dance, theater and visual arts. Call 828.262.3017 or click here for the online prospectus.
METAL ART (February 23)--The juried exhibition calls for artists working in blacksmithing, casting, fabricating or any other form of art in which the primary material is metal. The Creative Communities Program at the Vermont Council on Rural Development has opened its final round of applications for program assistance. This round will complete the Jane's Trust grant for working with 14 communities around the state to jumpstart the local creative economies. CREATIVE ECONOMY
The Program works with towns to apply a creative economy perspective to advancing the intersection of culture, community and commerce. They help launch projects that leverage cultural and community development to build a strong local economy. Current participants include Grand Isle County, Hardwick, Plainfield, Randolph, Rockingham/Bellows Falls, Rutland, St. Albans City, St. Johnsbury, and Windsor. Two current projects initiated through the Creative Communities Program in St. Albans City are planning for an Arts and Cultural Center and planning for the next generation of high speed Internet downtown.

The Vermont Jazz Center is a resource. It is a home to weekly jam sessions, classes and monthly concerts, and hosts a renowned summer jazz workshop, now in its 26th year.
