ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column. STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS
Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons at 1 p.m., at ChowBella or at the Overtime Saloon in St Albans 8-10 p.m. most Wednesday evenings, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
The 30th anniversary of the South Burlington Community Chorus will be celebrated in a concert Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael's College, McCarthy Fine Arts Center, Recital Hall. The Choral Union of Vermont will joining the Chorus to perform Lux Aeterna by Morten Lauridsen. It will be performed with a local orchestra and has been hailed as the 20th century's Messiah. The South Burlington Community Chorus has several Franklin County voices including Ken Kaye, tenor, Arlene Jarvis Soprano, Donna Costes, alto, Jim Reath, tenor. Former St. Albans resident Mike Dowling, bass, is the current Community Chorus President. The orchestra is a pick-up orchestra made up of VSO and other area musicians.
"The concert is going to be very special and the combined Choruses sound glorious," said Community Chorus music director Karleen Teply.
Contemporary composer Morten Lauridsen reads and studies poetry every day. He has set poems from several historical eras to music and is attracted to the multi-movement piece unified by a central poetic theme. He follows a precedent set by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Copland, Barber, and many other composers.
Lux Aeterna (Eternal Light) is one long chant that is intimate, quiet, and serene. It draws from several different Latin sources including the requiem mass, each of which refers to Light. It was composed for the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
The second half will feature each group performing shorter pieces alone and combined. The program includes This Sweet and Merry Month of May by William Byrd, The Turtle Dove by R. Vaughn Williams, Alleluia and The Last Words of by Randall Thompson, At The River, a hymn tune adapted by Aaron Copland, three madrigals by Emma Lou Diemer with accompanist Andrea Orlyk, the spiritual Who'll Be A Witness with Tracy Potter, baritone, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Tickets are available in advance from any chorus member, or at the door. Parking is accessible.
Palettes of Vermont is a statewide community arts that has distributed 7,000 maple palettes and over 30,000 paper palettes. Exhibition of the finished palette art begins officially at Open Studio Weekend and continues through Halloween. (The AAC held the first Franklin County show during the Maple Festival.) The Fourteenth Annual Vermont Open Studio Weekend will be held May 27 and 28.
Most Vermont artists and craftspeople work in studios located in or close to their residences. These places of production and inspiration, located in downtowns and at the ends of dirt roads, reflect the process the artist uses to produce a finished work of art.
Palettes of Vermont will be on display at Vermont State Craft Center and elsewhere around the state during Open Studio Weekend
The All Arts Council and S.A.F.F. will create a special Open Studio in Taylor Park for Open Studio weekend. We invite artists to "set up shop" there for a working event held in conjunction with an exhibit of the World's Largest Palette and an art show/sale.

ESSEX JUNCTION--The Lincoln Inn has bowed to inflationary pressure and added more music to its lineup. Sunday evenings are the jazz dinner club. On Monday they host open band auditions. Tuesday is still bluegrass. Wednesday is Celtic party night. Thursday is WCLX blues night. They have live music both Friday and Saturday. ON STAGE LIVE
The Nobby Reed Project plays tonight, 7-10 p.m. and the Phil Abair Band, popular in Summer Sounds, plays tomorrow evening and Saturday both, 9 p.m.-close.

BURLINGTON--Queen City Contras will hold a Contra Dance with caller Dan O’Connell and musicians Will Patton, Brendan Taafe, and Brian Perkins at St. Anthony’s Hall on Friday at 8 p.m. with a beginner’s session at 7:45 p.m. Call 802.434.2446 for info.
ST. ALBANS--Une Soiree du Printemps will feature Michele Choiniere and her band (Rachel Aucoin, Sabin Jacques, Will Patton and Don Schabner) followed by a contra dance with caller Mark Sustic on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall Auditorium. Click here for more info.
FAIRFAX--The regular Music Session continues Saturday with acoustic instrumentalists playing traditional songs at the Foothills Bakery, 1-4:30 p.m. Admission is free by donation.
WATERVILLE--Cambridge Arts Council presents community dances on Saturdays at 7 p.m. in the Waterville Town Hall. The evening will feature contras, squares, circles, play parties and singing games and all dances will be taught. Bring a partner, the entire family, or come alone. Caller Mark Sustic offers dance instruction. Frank Heyburn and Michele Lajoie play. Guest musicians with acoustic instruments are welcome. Admission is $5 per person and $10 for families at the door.
ST. ALBANS--The Overtime Saloon offers Open Mic with Abby Jenne and Friends every Wednesday at 8 p.m. Abby encourages performers of all kinds to attend. If you need instrumental accompaniment, email with the title/artist of song you wish to perform. Click here for more info.
Ensemble Soleil is a juried VAC group of four to seven musicians that has presented concerts in Vermont since 1998. They sing and play Renaissance music for viola da gamba, lute and organ or Baroque and Classical music for string ensemble and harpsichord/fortepiano.
