STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS

ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.

Stop in for live music and more at the Fairfax Music Sessions at the Foothills Bakery in Fairfax most Saturday afternoons, at the Kept Writer in St Albans most Friday and Saturday evenings, at the Bayside in St Albans Town most Sunday afternoons, and the Cambridge CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. The booked performances and acoustic Open Mike Nights feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

NATTERING?

The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents Natterjack on Saturday. The high energy sextet will fill the hall with contemporary Celtic music at 8:00 p.m. They are returning to the Opera House to celebrate their second CD, Hop2It, released in March.
A Natterjack concert mixes old and new; this sonic cornucopia fuses traditional music interspersed with original works by Allen Church, and even some American pop and jazz elements and Latin rhythms thanks to lilting melodies sung by vocalist Heidi Ames, flute, pennywhistle, and guitar; plus Steven Ames, piano-accordion; Allen Church, fiddle, vocals, hammered dulcimer, guitar; Dave DiDomenico, guitars, mandolin, trumpet; Dov Schiller, percussion, vocals; and Brian Woods, bass, guitar, vocals. Their sound melds the groove and chord structures of jazz, rock, blues, and world rhythms with traditional Celtic melodies and songs from Europe and the New World.
Natterjack arranges traditional dance music as concert music. Their presentation not only displays varied instruments but also shows their love to jam and to do improv which highlights their tendencies toward jazz, and pop, and rock and roll. They are juried performers in the Vermont Arts Council Register.
The evening Opera House will draw for a free Hop2it CD from all concert goers, compliments of Natterjack. The drawing will take place at the end of the intermission. If the winner purchased the CD at the concert, the purchase price will be refunded. Natterjack released On the Fly, their first CD, in 2002.
The natterjack toad is an endangered species and the only amphibian native to Ireland. The 10 cm toad is recognizable by its olive-yellow color and irregular darker patches. It has orange colored wart-like lumps on its dorsal parts and a yellow line running down the spine. During the day it remains hidden under stones or in holes in the ground and becomes active at concert time. It does not hop.
Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and $5 for 12 and under. Tickets are available through the All Arts Council ticket centers: Enosburg Pharmacy and Merchants Bank in Enosburg, Better Planet Books, Toys, and Hobbies and the Kept Writer in St. Albans, and Swanton Rexall.       The Bronx Museum of the Arts offers solo and group exhibitions of emerging and mid-career artists. Their permanent collection includes primarily contemporary and twentieth century art.
The site hosts a huge virtual taste of Graffiti as an international urban art form. It is interactive with the ability to "paint the trains, comment, or simply look at what people are making." This is a 300K download that requires Shockwave 8 and other plug-ins. Also on exhibit now are the Commodification of Buddhism, an examination of Buddhism and Buddhist iconography in commercial and popular culture plus the work of late Korean American artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha.
