Stop in for the AAC CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and workshops. We come together on the second Wednesday for a booked musical performance and an art exhibit at Simple Pleasures in St Albans. On the fourth Wednesday come to the Kept Writer in St Albans for acoustic Open Mike Night featuring music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
The All Arts Council and St Luke's Episcopal Church will host the first of an annual series of St Luke's Art Galas in the parish hall on Saturday with a wine and cheese reception. St Luke's featured artists for this show include Jane Bower, Pat Burton, Louise Bellows Counos, Barbara Hamm, and Douglas Underwood. Although some exhibitors are well known, respected artists, this will be the first public show for others. ARTY PARTY AT ST LUKE'S
A still life oil painting was donated by Louise Bellows Counos for the St Luke's raffle.
"We all want to the church to recapture its patron roots in the arts," said The Reverend Dennis Hayward, rector of St Luke's. "Events like this help us maintain the parish hall that is used by countless organizations [including the AAC] throughout the community."
The winning ticket will be drawn at the show on Saturday afternoon. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.
Artist and retired elementary school teacher Jane Bower likes varied textures in her work. She adds objects and materials such as wire, sand, wood, and fabric to her acrylic paintings. During the Maple Festival, she began a series of copper wire figures that will be on exhibit in this show.
Louise Bellows Counos often works in acrylic. She will also show a beach scene with three little girls, a floral arrangement, horses running in a stream, a Victorian girl in a garden in oil, Dad's Shoes, a pastel of her father's shoes, and, of course, a wolf.
"I did take instruction from a friend in oil," Barbara Hamm said, "but I started in water with the nuns We had only red, yellow, blue, white, and black, so I still use very limited colors and go back to those old habits." She will show souvenir paintings from Seville, from Cordoba, from Portugal as well as covered bridges here in Vermont.
She is also gathering a group of people to paint in her home starting in October. "I can get so lost in [painting] I don't hear the phone," she said.
Douglas Underwood will exhibit watercolor and acrylic landscape paintings. "I take photographs and paint from that, I get ideas from other pictures, and from my imagination," he said. "Others are strictly from memory."
He began studying with Mark Montalban at the Elder Art program. "That renewed my interest in art," Mr. Underwood said.
The AAC/St Luke's Gala will be held in the Parish Hall of St Luke's Episcopal Church on Bishop Street, Saturday afternoon, 4-6 p.m. Admission is free. Some works on exhibit are from private collections and many are for sale.
The Vermont Opera Theater returns to the Opera House at Enosburg Falls on Saturday to present a cabaret of old operetta and musical theater tunes and opera favorites. The show will include some the French music of Charles Trenet plus Romberg, Herbert, Gershwin, Hammerstein, Puccini, and Bizet. S'WONDERFUL: A CABARET EVENING AT THE OPERA HOUSE
Baritone Simon Chausse and soprano Deirdre Tascarella will perform Showboat duets in Annie Get Your Gun, and Make Believe as well as solos of the Toreador Song, Art is Calling for Me and Summertime. Their piano accompanist is classically trained pianist Mary Jane Austin.
The Vermont Opera Theater features professional talent from around the state in chamber opera, opera sung in English, as well as operetta, original programs, and the standard repertoire. The company also offers summer opera workshops. Last season they presented Amahl and the Night Visitor at the Opera House.

ENOSBURG FALLS--The Annual Franklin Northeast Supervisory District Student Art Exhibit continues through today at the Opera House as the FNESU welcomes visitors from the Asian Studies Program to Franklin County. ART ON THE WALLS
ENOSBURG FALLS--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls features an AAC watercolor and print show with the works of Connie Clay-Bickel, Michael Domina, Mary Harper, and Valerie Ugro. The exhibit fills the downstairs gallery.
HIGHGATE SPRINGS--The AAC exhibit at the Welcome Center at the Highgate Springs Border station hosts fine art photographer Wayne Tarr with the black-and-white Spider Woman, Precious Cargo, and more.
ST ALBANS-- Roy Newton of Grand Isle is in his ninth year of annual one-man shows at the Northwestern Medical Center. He has chosen a group of monoprints from the approximately 250 which he has created in the past two years. About 70 of his prints will be included in his new book, An Island Year, to be published this winter by Price-Patterson.

Earlier this month, NASA launched Sentry, a site dedicated to reporting how many asteroids are in our planetary neighborhood, how big they are, and the likelihood one will crash into Earth. This site has very little art, but it's simply too cool to miss because it offers good news for readers trying to calculate (or photograph) the end of the world. Sentry is operated by NASA's Near Earth Object office. (For the acronym challenged, Near Earth Objects are called "NEOs.") It has a mix of technical data for scientists, and general information for people who like to gamble on when the world will come to an end. CLICK HERE: ART SITE OF THE WEEK
Vermont Opera Theater is an Affiliate Member of OPERA America. This service organization supports the creation, presentation, and enjoyment of opera with resources for artists and teachers as well as news, publications and databases, conferences, and legislative advocacy.
