Stop in for the AAC CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and workshops. We come together on the second Wednesday for a booked musical performance and an art exhibit at Simple Pleasures in St Albans. On the fourth Wednesday come to the Kept Writer in St Albans for acoustic Open Mike Night featuring music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
Not enough snow? Too much snow? Winter simply too bland? The All Arts Council Concert for Grumpy Grownups series will fix you right up. GRUMPY?
Feel the splash when a humpback whale pec-slaps the surf in Gustav W. Verderber's Sojourns in The Wild on Saturday evening at St Luke's Episcopal Church. This visual and musical celebration of nature starts eyeball to eyeball with the gigantic spiders and mites of a Montgomery Center pasture. Astronomic on the projection screen, at any rate. Since the air remains warm, Mr. Verderber next dips us into an Atlantic tidal pool for the lifestyles of the bizarre and kaleidoscopic.
Sojourns is a cinemagraphic slide show with an original score. There will be a host of red-eyed frogs, blue footed boobies, giant tortoises, Galapagos sea lions, and perhaps even a puffin. Don't forget to hyperventilate a little before the ride on the back of the breeching humpback. The multiple projectors create a virtual tour of landscapes, wildlife, and marine life in pristine natural areas of Alaska, the Galapagos Islands, the Atlantic, and Vermont.
The Messenger has featured many of Mr. Verderber's photographs.
Vermont's foremost nationally-published nature photographer, Mr. Verderber is a photojournalist, naturalist in residence, and visual artist. Sojourns will be the keynote presentation America's Asilomar Rally in Carmel, CA in March.
The compositions of internationally renowned Celtic harpist William Jackson provides the musical transportation for the images. Also a solo performer and composer, Mr. Jackson is a founder of Ossian, has performed for Prince Charles, regularly appears with Fiona Ritchie on Thistle and Shamrock on Vermont Public Radio, and is the composer of Scotland's new national anthem.
Sojourns in The Wild will be presented Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary at St Luke's Episcopal Church in St Albans. Tickets are $8/adults, $5/senior citizens and students, children under 12 free and are available now at Better Planet Books Toys and Hobbies, the Kept Writer, Spears Pharmacy in Enosburg, and Swanton Rexall.
The Concert for Grumpy Grownups series is presented by the All Arts Council of Franklin County and the St Albans Messenger.
Entertainer and teacher Gary Dulabaum has been teaching around Franklin County this week in a series of high energy, participatory sing-alongs. The former kindergarten teacher is a songwriter, performer, and comedian who has recorded five albums of children's music. His Franklin County residency concludes tomorrow. GARY DULABAUM
Franklin County Early Childhood Programs presents a free public workshop and performance of Different, Yet the Same: Exploring Inner Space tonight from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Conference Room #1 at the Northwestern Medical Center. Mr. Dulabaum will offer songs, poems, and writings about self-esteem, self-worth, friends and friendships, accepting people as they are, peer mediation, being responsible for what we say and do, and making good, well-informed decisions.
Although the workshop is organized for teachers, parents, child care providers, playgroup leaders, and librarians, "We hope anyone interested will come," said organizer Mark Sustic. It is free. There is no advance registration required.
"Just show up and expect to have a great time," Mr. Sustic said.
The Enosburgh Public Library Winter Story Hour Series begins this morning with a performance by Gary Dulabaum at the library, at 10 a.m. The weekly story hours are sponsored by the library. Mr. Dulabaum's performance is funded by a grant from Enosburg/Berkshire Success by Six. All story hours are free and open to the public.
The residency, concluding tomorrow with events at St. Albans Town Educational Center, BFA-Fairfax, and Fletcher Elementary School, is sponsored by the All Arts Council, Child Care Programs at the Family Center, the Comfort Inn, the County Courier, Franklin County Early Childhood Programs, Franklin County Success by Six, Mousetrap Pediatrics, and Northwestern Medical Center.
