Stop in for the AAC CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and workshops. We come together on the second Wednesday for a booked musical performance and an art exhibit at Simple Pleasures in St Albans. On the fourth Wednesday come to the Kept Writer in St Albans for acoustic Open Mike Night featuring music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents Afrique Aya on Saturday. This Vermont-based multi-cultural group of dancers and drummers performs the energetic music, culture, and rich tradition of West Africa. Special guest Aboubacar, a master drummer from the Ivory Coast, will participate in the Saturday concert. AFRICAN CULTURE IN MOTION
Kouakou Yao Angelo founded the troupe in 1999. Regulars in performing arts festivals and events throughout New England, they have performed in the Magic Hat Annual Festival, the Flynn ArtsSpace opening, Burlington International Fair, the Independence Day Celebration in Montpelier, and the St Michael's College orientation. Afrique Aya also teaches West African dance, drumming, singing, drum-making, and theater. They host interactive cultural workshops at public workshops, schools, and arts communities.
The evening also includes the opening of a new All Arts Council exhibit of Vermont Photography. The landscapes, portraits, and fine art imagery will include work from AAC member artists Bob Brodeur, April Henderson, David Juaire, Gustav Verderber, Wayne Tarr, and more. The display will fill the downstairs gallery and will remain on exhibit through Christmas.
Afrique Aya opens on Saturday at 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $9 general admission, $7.50 seniors (over 60) and students, $5 children 12 and under. The Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble presents The Soldier's Tale in the FlynnSpace in Burlington, on Friday and Saturday evening. SOLDIER'S TALE
"This concert is dedicated to the memory of innocent victims of war and hate," said VCME director/founder Steve Klimowski of Fairfax.
The Soldier's Tale playbill includes Ricordanza for cello and piano by George Rochberg, a full production of Stravinsky's Faustian tale L'Histoire du Soldat, and will premiere the Trois Quartet by Charlotte, Vermont, composer Alex Abele. L'Histoire du Soldat features Mark Nash as the Narrator, Daniel Rezac as the Soldier, Peter Boynton as the Devil, and Sandra Stanton as the Princess.
Mark Nash of Charlotte is well known to AAC audiences as the leader of our Summer Stage workshop. He has worked as an actor, director, playwright, teacher, and producer in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Minneapolis, and New York for over 20 years. He is the Artistic Director of the Vermont Stage Company where he will play the role of Marc in Art, and will direct Waiting for Godot and Our Town.
Daniel Rezac made his Vermont acting debut as the Doctor in Medication at the FlynnSpace. He has done commercial work, industrial videos, and a year-long tour with the Missoula Children's Theater of Montana. He will begin graduate school in cinema next fall.
Peter Boynton has worked on stage, film, and television productions as an actor, dancer, singer, and director for over 20 years. Audiences saw him in the Broadway revival of She Love Me. He has starred in tours with Ann Blyth and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and had roles on One Life To Live", "The Catlins, and as Tonio Reys on As The World Turns. He is the director of the spring musicals at Harwood Union High School and the founder and president of The Commons Group, a non-profit arts organization.
Dancer Sandra Stanton began her R.A.D. training at the age of five, joined Mohawk Valley Performing Arts Regional Dance Company at twelve, and spent her summers with the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in Vail, Colorado, the Chicago City Ballet, and the Chautauqua Dance Company. She earned a B.F.A from the Juilliard School and teaches at The Movement Center and at UVM. She performs with rubberbandance in Montreal.
The Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble gives new classical music a voice in Vermont with a specialty of post-tonal masterpieces and the premier performances of living composers. They tour specific programs throughout the year and offer Spring and Fall concerts. The members are Jill Hallett Levis, mezzo soprano, Paula Innes-Dwyer and Elaine Greenfield, piano, Thomas Read, violin, Bonnie Klimowski, cello, and Steven Klimowski, clarinet. We will profile Steven and Bonnie Klimowski in an upcoming column.
The Soldier's Tale will be performed twice in the FlynnSpace in Burlington November 9-10 at 8 p.m. There will be preconcert talk at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults, and $9 students and seniors, and are available at the Flynn box office.
The Highgate Manor and Snow Farm Vineyard present the exclusive release of Snow Farm's 2001 Leon Millot Nouveau in Highgate Falls on Saturday. HATCHING SOME WINE, MUSIC, AND THE CIA
This year's Nouveau release will definitively answer the question, "Why did the Highgate chicken cross the road?" A chicken will carry a very small bottle of Nouveau across Highgate Road, Route 207, to the Manor. In return for her services, this chicken will not be included on the menu. Please drive slowly as you arrive.
Eric Hoh and the Straight Ahead Jazz Trio will play live jazz from 6-9 p.m. They play traditional jazz standards older than 1965, and bring the bass out in front (leader Eric Hoh is the bassman). Andy Hildebrandt, keyboard, of the jazz fusion band Free Fall and percussionist Eric Arnzen of the Main Street Jazz Quartet round out the trio. Expect some Mel Torme arrangements, Carmen McRae pieces, Take the A Train, and plenty of Frank Sinatra songs for dancing.
"Playing out is always treat," Mr. Hoh said, "and this is a chance to play the kind of music I like best."
The dinner buffet will feature Vermont products including Maple Roasted Duck with Blueberry/Ginger Sauce and Honey and Thyme Roasted Pork Loin, prepared by Manor chef Melissa Davidson, a Culinary Institute of America graduate. The complete dinner with hors d'oeuvres, wine, and jazz will cost $35 per person. Call 868-9007 for reservations.

SATURDAY--Rev. Nathan Brady Crain at 7 p.m. A rowdy and hilarious mix of Irish, folk and reluctant country music. Please note that this show may not be appropriate for all ages.
SUNDAY--Writing Group meets 2-5 p.m. Free-writes, reading and feedback in a relaxed setting.
