Stop in for the AAC CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and workshops. We come together on the second Wednesday for a booked musical performance and an art exhibit at Simple Pleasures in St Albans. On the fourth Wednesday come to the Kept Writer in St Albans for acoustic Open Mike Night featuring music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
I haven't been letting the grass grow under my feet in the ongoing search for Jewel. Regular readers will recall that Jewel--the better half of the Jasper and Jewel radio team--has gone missing. We have been using the All Arts Council Summer Sounds Jewel Quest kit to seek her out at each event this year, so far with less than perfect results. STOCKING UP ON GRASS
With or without Jewel, Summer Sounds does have world class "newgrass" from Southern Vermont on Sunday as Northwestern Medical Center presents the Stockwell Brothers in Taylor Park. These All Arts Council concerts are always on Sunday evenings, always at 7 p.m., always in a town park, and always free.
Bruce, Barry, and Alan Stockwell (the brothers) and Doug Raneri (the other brother) wield acoustic and electric guitars, 5-string banjo, mandolin, bass, and multi-flavored percussion to color the poetry of their music and to cast a spell over the audience. Their spell might even bring Jewel out of hiding. Their material has straight ahead rock, fingerpicked folk, mandolin medleys, and, of course, a skoch of blue and a little grass riding funk, reggae, and Latin grooves.
With their tasty arrangements, fraternal harmonies, and superb instrumentals, this trio has appeared with John McLaughlin, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Mary-Chapin Carpenter and John Gorka. The Stockwell Brothers recently completed a four-week West Coast tour and played an 11-country European tour last season. Their latest album is the critically acclaimed Leave My Dreams Alone.
Before and during the concert, the Congregational Church will serve a tableful of goodies for your sweet tooth. Meet some old friends and make new ones as you picnic in Taylor Park starting at 6:30.
The St Albans City Summer Sounds series is presented by the City of St Albans, and the All Arts Council, and sponsored by the Main Street Merchants, Northwestern Medical Center, select St Albans Area Attorneys, and the St Albans Area Realtors. The rain site is the Congregational Church. The community based All Arts Council brings the performing arts to northwestern Vermont.
No one found Jewel last week, so Sunday may be your best chance since there is only one Summer Sounds concert. If you see her, please let any AAC member know. A word to the tax department: I did pay the Magic Tax, so all concert goers are allowed to use magic or other spells to find our missing gem.

The Montgomery Historical Society will hold its annual AugustFest fundraiser at Pratt Hall on Saturday. An indoor art exhibit in Pratt Hall will showcase watercolors, oils, photographs, and other media by local artists. The artists include AAC members Eric Bataille, Michael Domina, and the late Ernest Heidersdorf. The magnificent antique stained glass Pratt Hall windows will surround the art. MONTGOMERY AUGUSTFEST
The watercolor painting "Sun Down" by Michael Domina will be raffled. An AAC member and Montgomery native, Michael Domina returns to Montgomery each summer to teach art classes and exhibit his work. The painting is valued at $250.
A silent auction will go on throughout the day. The auction includes four sets of four limited edition prints by Ernest Heidersdorf, Canada's foremost wildflower painter. His work can be found in the homes of some of the nation's leading art lovers as well as in private collections around the world.
The event also includes antique dealers under a large tent, baked goods, plants and treasures, all of which contribute to the fundraiser. A luncheon of freshly made pulled-pork sandwiches, baked beans, salads and a delicious chocolate cake will be served, all created by local chefs, will be served at noon.
AugustFest is Saturday only, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at Pratt Hall on Route 118 in Montgomery Village. Call 326-4404 or 326-4817 for info.
New England's British ballad tradition invades the Highgate Historical Society Museum on Sunday as singer and scholar Burt Porter presents a free program of Vermont ballads. A NEW BRITISH INVASION
Traditional British (and French-Canadian) ballads are a rich part of our literary and musical heritage. Singer and scholar Burt Porter's ancient British songs relate the often tragic narrative with intricate poetry and familiar melodies. Porter sings, plays fiddle and mandolin, and focuses on the Vermont versions of these songs. He offers a running commentary on the history and art of balladry.
This free program from the Vermont Council on the Humanities is co-sponsored by the Highgate Public Library and the Highgate Historical Society, Saturday in the Highgate Historical Museum at 2 p.m.
Enosburg/Berkshire Success By Six presents storyteller/performer Recille Hamrell at the final summer pre-school story hour, in the Enosburgh Public Library today at 10a.m. The performance is free and open to the public. THE SUMMER BOOK NOOK
Tommorrow the Enosburgh Public Library and the Vermont Department of Libraries present Vermont Game Warden Greg Eckhardt in a visit for all the school age children participating in the summer Wild About Reading program. Greg will arrive in a really cool, mud-covered pickup truck at 1 p.m. The summer reading program is free and open to the public.
Shannon Jette is a member of the professional dance company a.c.m.e. (A Contemporary Music Ensemble) in Seattle Washington, led by choreographers Holly Eckert and Richard Ayres. Shannon recently gave a performance of dance, classical guitar, and "significant non sequitur" in the Echo Theater in Seattle. YAHOO
Shannon studied dance with Debbie White and with Manon Pellman. She was graduated from MVU in 1993 and received her BA in Dance from Roger Williams University. She has also studied at the Boston Conservatory.
