ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column. STUFF YOU SHOULDN'T MISS
Stop in for the AAC CoffeeHouses at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of every month. These gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and workshops. We come together on the first Thursday for a booked musical performance and an art exhibit at Simple Pleasures in St Albans. On the third Thursday come to the Kept Writer in St Albans for acoustic Open Mike Night featuring music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.
The Sky is Blue over the St Albans as Pat Murphy and Chris Conti of Blue Sky perform completely unplugged with an eclectic mix of country and more at the monthly AAC CoffeeHouse at Simple Pleasures tonight at 7 p.m. The paintings of AAC member Connie Clay-Bickel will be on exhibit. The artwork will remain at Simple Pleasures through November 30. BLUE SKY AND NO SNOW
The All Arts Council sponsors the CoffeeHouse with music, networking time, and "show-and-tell" at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. Admission is always free, but donations are appreciated.
The watercolor paintings of AAC board member Joy Crane are featured this month at the Highgate Springs Welcome Center, immediately south of the U.S.-Canadian border crossing.
The Alliance Francaise of Vermont and Cercle Quebecois present the second annual Martha and Andre ... Merci! concert of Franco-American music on Sunday at St Michael's College. The concert is dedicated to the memories of Martha Pellerin and Andre Germain who did so much to preserve and extend Franco-American family knowledge and cultural heritage in Vermont. The concert will feature singers and musicians from New England and Quebec, including Lausanne Labombarde and Linda Pervier; Michele Choiniere and her family; John and Eric Drury; Suzanne Germain and Carol Reed; Seth Briggs; and Dennis Giroux et Gaston Delisle. Josee Vachon will be Mistress of Ceremonies.
Martha Pellerin is well known to Franklin County audiences for statewide productions such as the Soiree Grand Menage and for her intimate performances in schools, homes, and at Norm Gagne's annual party. Martha passed away last year.
"Martha would say that to be Franco American you don't have to speak French," Michele Choiniere said. "You can relate to it because the culture that exists in your family, the music, the songs, and the ways of being. I'm going to sing one of her old songs with John as well as some new tunes. In memory of Martha, we want it to be upbeat."
Michele will also headline a soiree and school residency with Benoit Bourque later this month as part of the Millennium Series in the Opera House at Enosburg Falls.
Martha, Andre ... Merci! will be presented in the MacCarthy Art Center of St Michael's College in Colchester on Sunday at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are appreciated to defray the concert costs. Music is a universal language. You need not speak French to enjoy the entire program.
The Kept Writer presents its second monthly poetry/fiction reading. "Anyone is welcome to come to read their own works or someone else's," said Jedd Kettler. KEPT READINGS
This is another open mike event, but it writers should call Jedd (527-6242) for info. David Southwick and May Shell, both featured poets in the AAC Poetry Month series, will return and Nat Worman is expected to read some short fiction.
Readings at the Writer will be this Sunday at 2 p.m. "We'll read until we run out of people," Jedd said, "probably until 5 or so."
The St Albans Free Library Fall Film Festival continues Monday evening at the Welden Theater. FILM FOR FALL
Wonderland, the story of the day-to-day lives of three sisters, is set in London. With edgy, real life photograph, this film explores the City of London as much as it looks at the sisters' character. Monday, November 6, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $4 with any valid library card
NEW WORKS REVEALED--Vermont artists and members of the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange present an evening of short performances with art dance, visual art and theater in the FlynnSpace, the intimate new "black box theater" at the Flynn Center for the Performing Arts next Friday, November 10. PLANNING AHEAD
Fairfield visual artist Gail Salzman and Bakersfield dancer/weaver Carol Crawford will produce a visual and movement improvisation called Fell Line.
"The fell line is a term from weaving," Gail said, "where the two directions of thread come together in a fabric. We actually have three modes of working--dancing weaving, and visual art--and we are intertwining them into a piece where the common threads in our creative lives come together."
The Clayplain Dance Project, co-directed by Jane Elin and Glennis Gold, is a newly formed company from Addison County.
Neth Urkiel-Taylor will perform an excerpt from his Dance Hall History project.
Gail Marlene performs Thinly Veiled, a solo theater piece that explores issues of marriage and female identity.
Tracy Penfield created and performs Wedding Dresses, a story dance with Ellen Powell on acoustic bass and Phil Thorne on clarinet.
Liz Lerman is world renowned for bringing people of all ages into dance. Her pioneering techniques in the Dance Exchange use dance and movement for teaching, for personal expression, and for wellness.
New Works Revealed will be performed next Friday, November 10, in the FlynnSpace, 149 Main Street, in Burlington. A critical response discussion will follow the production. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students at the Flynn Regional Box Office. Call the Flynn (802-86.FLYNN) for info.
CALL FOR MOVERS AND (VOICE) SHAKERS--Liz Lerman has held major workshops and performances during her St Albans residency since 1997. The residency is now completing its four-year journey with the Hallelujah Project at the Flynn Center in Burlington. Liz and other members of the Dance Exchange will hold three more movement workshops in Burlington to explore and develop Hallelujah, a new multimedia dance work that celebrates Vermont history, stories, and personal experiences. The first three workshops, which lead to the Hallelujah performance in March, take place next weekend, Saturday and Sunday November 11-12, in the UVM Dance Studio and Monday, November 13, on the Flynn MainStage.
The Dance Exchange also needs Franklin County singers for a chorus of voices that will complement one dance piece. If you want to join this exciting performance on the main stage of the Flynn, you will need to attend a different free workshop next Saturday, November 11, at the Amy E. Tarrant Gallery in the Flynn Center.
This event is part of a series of collaborations with Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and the St. Albans Area Community Arts Network. Funded by a four-year grant from the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, Audiences for the Performing Arts Network develops national models for the expansion of audiences through extended artist residencies. The Flynn is one of ten national sites in the network.
The project will culminate on March 16, 2001, with Vermonters performing in Hallelujah on Flynn MainStage. From Franklin County, students from New Beginnings program at BFA, senior men's chorus and community members of all ages are the long time players in this production. The schedule of workshops is below if you want to become involved, too.

Tero Shemeikka of Huddinge, Sweden, has created the World of Shemeikka Guide to his seven favourite Museums in Stockholm. The site includes links to the Hallwylska Museum, the Gold Room of the Historical Museum, and Millesgarden, the home of Carl Milles.
Spain is renowned for painters from Dali to El Greco to Goya to Picasso. Alonso Cano (1601-67) a Spanish sculptor, painter, architect, and draughtsman, of Granada, is often called "the Spanish Michelangelo" for his wide ranging talents. The WebMuseum-Paris has a Cano exhibit.
