A CHRISTMAS CAROL (October 28)--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls will hold open auditions for a family production of Ernie Hemingway's production of A Christmas Carol at the House on Friday, October 28. Auditions are open to anyone who can read a script. Click here for more info.
GEMS & GIANTS (October 30)--Bryan Memorial Gallery's member show combines large works, defined as 36" or larger on one side, with smaller works of art that measure 8" x 10" or smaller. Due to space considerations the "Giants" in this show will be juried while all member artists are invited to submit any three "Gems" of their choosing which will automatically be included in the show. Vermont's COVID paid leave grant programis still delayed. PANDEMIC NEWS
Recent CDC data shows that the aftereffects of long COVID have hit nearly a third of Americans diagnosed with COVID-19. West Virginia has the highest rate of long COVID symptoms at 49%; Vermonters report the lowest rate of long COVID at 22%. Vermont reported 391 new COVID-19 cases statewide last week, down from 483 the week before, as hospitalizations increased by 3 to 48 (that number has been edging up over the last few weeks from a low of 30). Franklin County's case load increased to 84 cases in the 14 days ending Saturday. The Vermont Department of Health reported October 12 that COVID-19 cases fell slightly. COVID-19 infections are still considered "Low." Hospitalizations increased.
Vermont relies on self reporting. You can report self-test results by following instructions on your test kit to automatically provide your results to your local health department or with the Vermont COVID-19 Self-Test Result Reporting Form. If you test positive, stay home and isolate for five days. You can leave your home on day six if your symptoms have improved and you have had no fever for at least 24 hours without the use of medicine that reduces fevers.
Take an at-home test if you begin having symptoms like fever, sore throat, runny nose, or loss of taste or smell, or at least five days after you come into close contact with someone with COVID-19, or if you plan a get together with people who are at risk of severe disease or may not be up to date on their vaccines. Ordering through the free at-home test program was suspended last month because Congress hasn't provided additional funding to replenish the nation's stockpile of tests. COVID.gov does have links for at-home tests at retailers and pharmacies, insurance reimbursement for at-home tests, and the 20,000 no-cost antigen and PCR COVID-19 test sites nationwide. Most major chains including Walgreens and Price Chopper locally should have free N95 masks.
Whether you have contracted and recovered from this coronavirus or haven't yet received a booster or even if you have done it all, immunity has waned for many of us. That lowered resistance leads to infections and increased transmission of the virus. To date, 16% of eligible Vermonters over the age of 12 have gotten the bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccine. That's compared to just 4% nationally. Here's my own advice. Get the COVID shot(s), get the booster(s), and take precautions, particularly if you are inside with other people--that still means wearing a mask indoors. The state will host a walk-in clinic for the new, reconfigured vaccines and boosters in the Fisher Pond building today at 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Click here for the complete walk-in clinic schedule.
No vaccine is 100% foolproof. Wash your hands. Keep wearing an N95 mask where you can't control the airflow around you until we reach the same herd immunity we have for smallpox and once had but lost for measles because so many parents refused to vaccinate their kids. Bonus: it will also help protect you from pollen, summer colds, and the winter flu.

You can also walk-in at Costco, CVS, Hannaford, Price Chopper/Market 32, Rite Aid, Shaw's, Walgreens, or Walmart, or get an appointment with CVS, Kinney Drugs, Walgreens, or UVMMC Outpatient Pharmacies. Providers and pharmacies must give vaccines at no cost to the patient.
ST. ALBANS--The Artist In Residence Gallery hosts a traditional Chamber Mixer this evening at 5:30 p.m. It's an opportunity to take in the artwork, visit with Chamber members, and hear a few words from Chef Adam Monette who is contributing sweets to the event and creating a grand prize raffle gift. The art and fine craft cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 40 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. MONTGOMERY--A Shared Life, a Collection of Art created by Carolyn and Harold Babcock, continues at the Montgomery Center for the Arts on Saturday and Sunday at noon - 4 p.m. The work and artifacts from their collection is on view at the MCA through October 30. Click here for more info.

NORTH HERO--Island Arts concludes community dancing to lively music for Easy International Folk Dancing with instructor Leslie Alpert in the Island Arts Center on Monday at 6 - 7 p.m. DANCE
All dances are taught. No partner required. No experience required, and new students are always welcome. Bring your water bottle. Masks are required inside. ALBANS--Osher Lifelong Learning Institute continues the Fall weekly program series with Summer Sounds favorite Banjo Dan Lindner offering the Songs of Vermont in the Greg Brown Lodge at Hard'ack on Wednesday at 11 a.m. He "will discuss the process of songwriting as I use it to compose songs based on life in Vermont and incidents in Vermont history, illustrating the talk with solo performances of several of my original songs." JEFFERSONVILLE--Bryan Memorial Gallery hosts the Land & Light 2022 Artist Roundtable on Sunday from 1 - 2 p.m. The panelists will include this year's winners as they share insights into their work and process. The gallery will announce the first Golden Artist Viewer's Choice Award.

Here's my own plan with over one million U.S. deaths and as our precautions wane. I got the COVID and Flu shots, and the boosters, and I take precautions because no vaccine is 100% foolproof. I wash my hands. I double mask with a genuine N95 mask (not a bandana and not a "chin strap") and a surgical mask where ever I can't control the airflow. It isn't much of a burden and it mostly protects me from all the people without masks I see in stores and concerts. ON STAGE LIVE
