PANDEMIC NEWS

"On the COVID front," Gov. Phil Scott said last week, "things continue to move in the right direction with hospitalizations continuing to trend downward."
New case counts do continue to fall. Vermont reported 1,511 new COVID-19 cases last week, two-and-a-half times as many per capita as neighboring New York. Franklin County reported 161 cases in the 14 days ending last Friday.
Vermont relies on self reporting. Every home in the U.S. is eligible to order four free at-home COVID-19 tests from COVIDtests.gov. Most major chains including Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart should have free N95 masks for distribution.
The CDC relaxed its COVID-19 precautions; people in areas of low and moderate transmission may remove masks indoors. According to the new metrics, Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle Counties are at a "medium" risk of transmitting the virus. Masks are still recommended in the five high risk counties--Addison, Bennington, Orange, Rutland and Washington.
Here's my own advice as U.S. deaths approach one million. Whether you have contracted and recovered from this coronavirus or haven't yet received a booster or even if you have done it all, immunity has waned for many of us. That lowered resistance leads to infections and increased transmission of the virus. Get the COVID and Flu shot(s), get the booster, and take precautions. Statewide, about 297,300 Vermonters or 65% of the eligible population has completed vaccination and gotten a booster. Franklin County reports that about 61% of the people have completed the series.
No vaccine is 100% foolproof. Wash your hands. Keep wearing an N95 mask where you can't control the airflow around you until we reach the same herd immunity we have for smallpox and once had but lost for measles because so many parents refused to vaccinate their kids. Bonus: it will also help protect you from pollen, summer colds, and the winter flu.
Vaccination clinics for booster shots and for the first or second dose of vaccine are open across Vermont for anyone age 12 or older. Call 855.722.7878 or click here to make an appointment or for more info. You can also walk-in at Costco, CVS, Hannaford, Price Chopper/Market 32, Rite Aid, Shaw's, Walgreens, or Walmart, or get an appointment with CVS, Kinney Drugs, Walgreens, or UVMMC Outpatient Pharmacies.

ALMOST LIVE ON STAGE

Here's a song to follow that little bit of blustery cold sugar snow this past week. Rocketman and a bunch of his friends got up on stage at the Marathon, FL, Community Park on a September Saturday in 2012 and recorded It Beats 40 Below on YouTube.
Robert Hudson--known to locals as Rocketman--was born in Memphis, came to vacation in the Keys, and never left. Among his most prized possessions were photographs of himself and Elvis Presley playing sandlot football. Rocky passed away in 2016.
