     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

TRADITIONS

BURLINGTON--The 2019 Young Tradition Vermont Festival continues through Saturday in the Burlington City Arts Center, Integrated Arts Academy, Burlington Violin Shop, UVM Medical Center, and Contois Auditorium, and more.
      Genticorum plays on the international world, trad, folk, and Celtic music circuit. BCA Center this evening at 6 p.m. Festival Club opens after the show at the Half Lounge with host band Pete's Posse at 8 p.m.
      Irish fiddler and member of the Irish-American supergroup The Gloaming Martin Hayes from County Clare. BCA Center Friday at 6 p.m. Festival Club opens after the show at the Half Lounge with host band Pete's Posse at 8 p.m. Mr. Hayes will also give an Irish Fiddle Workshop at the Burlington Violin Shop on Saturday at 10 a.m.
      The annual Young Tradition Contest Finals begin in Contois Auditorium on Saturday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. A Showcase Concert featuring students and their mentors and special guests at 6 p.m. There will be a reception with free pizza at 5 p.m.
      The Martha Pellerin Tribute Concert features Benoit Bourque, Claude Methe, Dana Whittle and others. As an historical note, one of the first events the All Arts Council staged was the Franco Voyageurs with Ms. Pellerin, M. Bourque, and M. Methe Contois Auditorium on Sunday at 3 p.m.
      The festival brings together young people involved in traditional music and dance, and those who support and are interested in what they do. The young performers are the focus, supported by their teachers, mentors, friends and families. With opportunities to interact with others, young people can use what has inspired them, what they have learned, and opportunities to perform to inspire others.

CALL FOR ARTISTS

SWANTON--The Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge will host the annual art show which kicks off during the Wild Bird Day Open House in May. An artist reception will be held the evening before the opening day.
      Any two dimensional medium including oil, acrylics, watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, photographs, and fabric-related pieces that can be hung is welcome. Paintings and drawings should depict birds or anything related to what might be found in a landscape that helps birds in their migration, breeding, such as the lake, river, marsh, forest, wildlife, insects, wildflowers/plants, fields and interpretations of any of these at the Refuge. Photographs are preferred if taken on Refuge but may be from other sites that are local breeding, wintering, or stopover areas for birds found in the Refuge.

      The 26th anniversary of World Migratory Bird Day. now known as World Bird Day, has the theme, Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution.


ART FOR THE HOUSE

ST. ALBANS--The Artist In Residence hosts a Stitch & Sip Fundraiser at the Barlow Street Community Center on Saturday at 3 p.m.
      New to handwork? Never sewn a button? Here's the chance to learn how. $40 includes all materials. Tickets are available at the A.I.R. Gallery.


ART ON THE WALLS

ST. ALBANS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on Arlene Jarvis' unique, intricate beadwork jewelry; the functional pottery by Martha McGinn; the landscapes of Vermont and Arizona in Holly Spier's jewelry; and the underwater dance of Wayne Tarr's photographic models.
      The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments and a raffle today 4:30 - 7 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of May.
      The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 40 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery on South Main Street is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Click here for more info.


ST ALBANS--The NMC Gallery hosts photographer Christine King in a solo show this month. Ms. King is exhibiting "springtime stuff, flowers and hummingbirds and more."
      An Operating Room nurse at Northwestern Medical Center, Ms. King focuses her photography on nature and animals. The show continues through the end of May.


ART YOU CREATE

MONTGOMERY--The Montgomery Center for the Arts continues a Figure Drawing Workshop in the LAB at MCAKeltonHall today at 5 p.m. The workshop carries on every Thursday through December 26. Each week a very groovy group of artists gather to work and socialize.


FAIRFIELD--Meta Strick begins the 2019 Sunday Afternoon Art Workshops at her studios on Sunday from 12 noon - 5 p.m. Materials and tools are provided (as well as a good time with great people).
      Ms. Strick describes the workshops as, "Loose, experimental, and fun." Each is a five hour opportunity to learn a new technique or improve on another. Try a different material. Share some new ideas. Enjoy exploration and play, and leave with a unique project. Ms. Strick is a mixed media artist who has been "playing with art since she was old enough to clutch a crayon in a chubby fist." The studio can accommodate eight participants. ST. ALBANS--Twiggs hosts Paint Nite: Design a Sign--Love You Mom on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
      Led by Diane Kingston, this Paint Nite makes wood wall art that showcases a personal style. Choose from hundreds of unique stencils to build and paint a one-of-a-kind sign. The cost is $55. IN THE SAC

SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council will hold a Board Meeting and Updates at the Swanton Free Public Library on Monday at 6 p.m. Meetings are held on the first Monday of each month.

ON STAGE LIVE

Thursday
JEFFERSONVILLE--River Arts hosts Pojazz, poetry and jazz with Will Patton on bass and featuring bebop Barry Reis on trumpet, artist Karen Henderson, and poet Tony Whedon at the Farm Store all this evening at 6 p.m. Admission is by suggested donation of $10 at the door.
      The Farm Store is the local green grocer with natural food, a cafe, and bakery.


Friday
ENOSBURG--The Opera House at Enosburg Falls presents local alternative rockers Insider with special guest Prohibition on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
      Milton's Insider has Zac Young, vocals; Matt Brault, lead guitar; Gabri Hurst, drums; Zach Hayes, bass; and Carson Cowhig, rhythm guitar. Their musical influences include Black Sabbath, Nirvana, and many more.
      General admission is $10. Tickets are available at the door or find them on Facebook for tickets and more info.


Friday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents veteran acoustic musicians Dale Darcy on Friday and Boston singer/songwriter Ryan Sweezey on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

ESSEX JUNCTION--S.A.S is having a Pre Cinco De Mayo Party at the Pearl Street Pub on Saturday at 7 p.m. Their classic rock comes with Corona and a twist of lime.
      Scott Guptill, April Reynolds Begnoche and Scott Belisle are energetic seasoned musicians playing classic and pop rock songs from the 70s to the 90s.


ESSEX JUNCTION--The Double E presents Summer Sounds favorite Jon Gailmor on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Doors at 7.
      Mr. Gailmor was born in New York City and failed to grow up near Philadelphia, in Westport, Providence, Newburyport, and at the University of Pennsylvania. The "Extraordinary Vermonter" will play almost all original songs with a lot of audience participation because he makes the audience feel welcome. "I can't express how much it means to me to have people hear [and enjoy] the music." He has written and performed since 1971 in a tennis stadium in Lima, Peru, in theaters in Russia, coffeehouses in the New York, and in Summer Sounds with us. His concerts involve the family and his performances are renowned for audiences singing and clapping together, guffawing, and weeping. His albums, going back to 1978, are available at
jongailmor.com. There may not be Clover but you can bet there will be Dirt.

ST. Albans--Nellys hosts a pre-Cinco de Mayo party on Star Wars Day with Revolver to celebrate el quinto or the Force or just May the Fourth on Saturday at 9 p.m. Revolver 2.0 is a cover band that plays classic and current rock music.


Plan Ahead
SHELDON--The 17th annual Farewell Reunion returns to Grace Church on May 24 at 7 p.m. There is always a huge cast of superb performers; this year the concert features the Jason Anick Acoustic Trio and Beg, Steal or Borrow.
      The benefit concert supports the Tom Sustic Fund, which supports families with children with life-threatening/life-altering conditions. The concert is presented by Young Tradition Vermont and Grace Church as part of the Summer Music at Grace Series.
      Admission is a $20 suggested donation at the door. There are no advance tickets. Everyone is asked to bring a dessert to share at intermission. email for more info or click here for more info.
