     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

YOUNG TRADITION CONTEST

      The 2019 Young Tradition Contest is accepting entries now through April 1. The contest encourages young musicians and dancers and support their entry and involvement in traditional music and dance. There are cash prizes ($1000, $500 and $250, for the top three), opportunities to perform, and connections that support a continued involvement in traditional music and dance.
      Email Young Tradition Weekend manager Yasi Zeichner and Mark Sustic with a video of your performance, the names and ages of all the performers, and a brief biography of yourself or the group.

MAYOR'S PHOTO COMPETITION

ST. ALBANS--The Mayor's Photo Competition is gearing up for 2019 with a theme of Lakes, Rivers and Waterways. Start taking photos now, including visions of ice fishing.
      The 2018 competition was a great success with 135 photos submitted. The top 15 photos were displayed in Taylor Park, then auctioned to benefit St. Albans Community Arts.

ARTISTS GATHER

ST. ALBANS--Swanton Arts Council will host an informal Artist Gathering and Meetup at 14th Star Brewing Company on Saturday at 6 p.m.
      The meetup is an opportunity to hang out, talk about projects you're working on, and rub elbows with other creative folk. All makers of any form of art are welcome: film makers, painters, photographers, potters, prestidigitators, puppeteers, soap makers, spoon benders, writers. Bring business cards to hand out and some of your art or writing to show off.
      Swanton Arts Council is free to join and you don't have to live in Swanton to become a member.

ART YOU CREATE

ST. ALBANS--The Grind Cafe hosts the Coffee Mug Paint'n'Sip on Saturday at 11 a.m.
      Victoria Vining offers a guided painting of personal mugs. This paint'n'sip will get you a hand crafted drink and a hand painted coffee mug to enjoy. The cost is $20 and includes supplies and a drink. Prepay either at the Grind or with Ms. Vining via Paypal. Call/text 413.717.5327 or email for more info.


ST. ALBANS--Twiggs hosts Paint Nite: Design a Sign--Be My Galentine on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
      This Paint Nite makes wood wall art that showcases a personal style. Choose from hundreds of unique stencils to build and paint a one-of-a-kind sign. The cost is $55. Click here for tickets. Use the code YAYfbVT10off for $10 off. Ticket sales close on Friday.

SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council will hold a Strategic Planning Meeting at on Monday at 6 p.m. Celebrate the SAC's fourth birthday and plan for the future. Email for more info.


FILM

MORRISTOWN--The Morristown Centennial Library hosts Alfred Hitchcock and the Art of Suspense on Saturday at 4 p.m.
      In the Humanities for Everyone program from VHC, film expert Rick Winston will discuss the evolution of Hitchcock’s craft, exploring his favorite themes, his relationship with his collaborators, and his wry sense of humor no matter how grisly the subject matter. Click here for more info

Thursday
SOUTH HERO--The Blue Paddle Bistro presents Carol Ann Jones in a solo singer-songwriter performance in the main dining room on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Ms. Jones will appear the third Thursday of each month.

Friday
ST. ALBANS--In Good Taste presents the live music of King Me along with culinary delights, sweets, wines, brews and spirits in St. Albans City Hall on Friday with tasting sessions at 4:30 and 7 p.m.
      The local taste-and-sip shines a spotlight on Northwest Vermont's farmers, food artisans, manufacturers, growers and producers. Admission is $12. Under 6 are free. Find them on Facebook for tickets and more info.


ST. ALBANS BAY--S.A.S. brings "classic rock with a twist" to its debut at the Bayside on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
      Scott Guptill, April Reynolds Begnoche and Scott Belisle are energetic seasoned musicians playing classic and pop rock songs from the 70s to the 90s at the Bay's oldest bar and restaurant.


SOUTH HERO--Snow Farm Vineyard features singer/songwriter Carol Ann Jones for Wine Down Friday on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

SHELDON--The Abbey hosts Friday Nights Music with Chris and Erica in the Winter Music Series on Friday at 7 p.m. The local duo have won acoustic performer contests and have opened for Jamie Lee at Higher Ground. The series continues through February 22.


Friday-Monday
ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents Django Soulo making music from the heart, for the heart, on Friday and Boston singer/songwriter Ryan Sweezey on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.
      Then on Monday, Chris Parker returns with Open Mic at 7 p.m. Come get your song on the first Monday of every month.

Sunday
BURLINGTON--The Vermont Youth Orchestra takes over the Flynn Main Stage for the Winter Concert on Sunday at 3 p.m. This concert was originally scheduled for January 20 but was postponed for severe weather concerns. Any tickets purchased for January 20 will be honored on February 3.
      The VYO welcomes Counterpoint, Vermont's professional vocal ensemble, as a special guest. Under the direction of Nathaniel Lew, Counterpoint will perform a capella renditions of spirituals and songs associated with the Civil Rights Movement to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 90th birthday. The orchestra will perform a Tribute to MLK by Duke Ellington. Soloist Sebastiaan West will be featured in a performance of the festive opening movement from Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1.
      Admission is $17 for adults and $12 for students. Click here for tickets and more info.
