      ArtBits always features a calendar of the goings on of Franklin County artists. Check out these events around Franklin County. Each issue includes the entire text of our weekly newspaper column.


     Franklin County's arts and music gatherings bring new opportunities, gossip, "show-and-tell" and occasional workshops. There are also booked and acoustic Open Mic Nights that feature music, readings, and more from the best new artists in Vermont.

MAGNIFICENT MILESTONES

MILTON--The Milton Art Guild celebrates its 30th anniversary as a guild and its first anniversary in the gallery with a MAGnificent Milestones Celebration featuring live music by folk duo, Waves of Adrenaline, on Saturday from 1 - 3 p.m.
      The Guild was established in 1988 by artists Lorraine Manley, Lorinda Henry. and Kathleen Redman to share their creative endeavors with other artists, promote artistic expression, and encourage each other to value time spent creating. In 2018 the MAG's membership has reached 185 members.
      In 2017, the MAG opened 6,270 square feet of retail space. This art center and gallery showcases the work of 100 MAG members and has become a hub for the arts in Milton and the region. The art center and gallery features exhibits (permanent and rotating); a frame shop, gift shop and rental space for artists and community groups. Visitors can see "artists in action," participate in ongoing art workshops, and community activities, Wednesdays - Sundays from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
      Refreshments will be served including 14th Star Brewery, Groennfell Meadery, Hillside Creamery, and the Champlain Islands Candy Lab.


ART FOR THE WALLS

ST. ALBANS--May is Mini Art Month and the Grind Cafe begins a series of Mini Art Sessions today at 11:30 a.m. There will be five classes, each held at the Cafe on Thursdays at 11:30 throughout May.
      Look for lots of hands on fun and instruction in 3D art (clay and origami), watercolor and color theory, mosaics and mixed media, pen and ink, and rock painting. The kids will show off their creations with a show during the last class. The $50 cost includes all five classes, all supplies, and the art show. RSVP as there is limited space.


ST. ALBANS--Free Studio Fridays continue in the Claire Payne Studio on Friday from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The studio is open to artists to get together and work at a studio in the company of other artists. These will be held every Friday until October 26. It is all free; bring your own project and materials.

ST. ALBANS--Twiggs hosts Paint Nite: Hummingbirds on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
      Artist Hanna Kingston "guides you friends through two lively hours of creativity, drinking, and laughing 'til your cheeks hurt." Paint Nite will provide all the materials to create your own painting and provides "the refreshments you need!"


ART ON THE WALLS

SWANTON--The Abenaki Circle of Courage Art Show will be held in Suite 49 of the Swanton School Apartments on Friday at 6 - 7:30 p.m.
      Children in the Circle of Courage master skills in Native dance and crafts, experience belonging through working together as youth leaders, practice independence in completing artistic projects, and exhibit generosity through community service. Light refreshment and snacks will be offered.

ST. ALBANS--The Artist In Residence Gallery features different artists each month. This month, the spotlight is on designer, photographer, fabricator Jon Bondy, outdoor illustrator Mylissa Kowalski Davis, and jewelry designer Holly Spier.
      The A.I.R. gallery hosts a free meet-the-artists reception with refreshments and a raffle today 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. The exhibit continues through the end of May.
      The Artist in Residence art cooperative features paintings, fiber arts, stained glass, sculpture, lamps, pottery, folk art boxes, scarves, hats and more by 40 Franklin County and surrounding area artists. It is owned and operated by the artists and sponsors. The gallery on South Main Street is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Click here for more info.


ST ALBANS--The Northwestern Medical Center Gallery hosts photographer Sandra Ferland in a solo show this month. The owner of Lasting Impressions in Enosburg Falls, Ms. Ferland is exhibiting landscape and floral prints on canvas and metal.
      The show continues through the end of May.


IN THE ARTS COUNCILS

ST. ALBANS--St. Albans Community Arts hosts its monthly Community Arts MeetUp in City Hall on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The gathering will discuss new and ongoing business, meet new people, and discuss any creative ideas that crop up. Click here for the minutes and reports of prior meetings and more.


SWANTON--The Swanton Arts Council will hold its monthly board meeting and update at the Swanton Village Complex on Monday at 6  p.m. All are welcome. Click here for the agenda.


FILM

SWANTON VT and CANNES FR--The short film, You Must Be Artificial, has been selected for screening at the Cannes Film Festival. The six minute science fiction short stars Sam Caswell of Swanton. It was scripted and directed by Chris K. Daniels with director of photography Jenny Whipple. It was aslo screened at the Terminus Conference + Festival.
      In 71 years, the famed festival has introduced other stars including Michelangelo Antonioni, Jane Campion, and Quenton Tarantino. The 2018 Cannes Film Festival begins on Tuesday and ends on May 19.


ON STAGE LIVE

Thursday
ESSEX JUNCTION--On Tap offers the Nobby Reed Project for Blues Night tonight at 7 p.m.
      On Tap has music on Tuesday through Saturday nights. Call 802.878.3309 or email for more info.


Thursday-Sunday
BURLINGTON--Young Tradition Weekend takes over the Queen City on Friday through Sunday.
      Every year, young singers, players, and dancers interested in traditional music and dance come together to perform for the community at large. Young folks are the focus, supported by their teachers, mentors, friends and families. The 2018 weekend. includes a multi-school contra dance party and dinner at Burlington High School tonight, Fara in two performances on Friday at 2:15 and 7:30 p.m., the Kids Day at Waterfront Park plus performances and the awards reception and concert on Saturday, and a huge tribute concert for Margaret MacArthur as well as a reception on Sunday.

ST. ALBANS--The Stragglers return to 14th Star Brewing Company on Friday at 6 p.m.
      BFA's own Eric Bushey, tenor banjo and vocals; Chris Kellogg, guitar, harmonica, and vocals; and Preston Randall, mandolin, harmonica, vocals, and bones will play hot roots, bluegrass, vintage country, Americana, and classic rock with their own spin.


Friday-Saturday
ST. ALBANS--Twiggs presents popular covers by Roy and the Wrecks on Friday and prolific Summer Sounds favorite singer/songwriter Mark LeGrand on Saturday. Shows begin at 7 p.m.

Saturday
ST. ALBANS--14th Star Brewing Company presents Gypsy Wind on the taproom stage on Saturday at 1 p.m.
      The St. Albans duo of Jesse John Potts and Andy Hoadley plays an eclectic repertoire of freshly interpreted covers and originals spanning several decades and genres on the first Saturday of the month.


ST. ALBANS--Durty Nelly's Irish Pub celebrates Cinco de Mayo with Barbie-N-Bones on Saturday at 9 p.m.
      Jenn DiNatale on vocals and Mark DiNatale on bass with Shawn Hayden on guitar and Rickey Bushey on drums play music to dance to. The band has been tearing it up since spring 2012.


Wednesday
ST. ALBANS--Sean Jarvis hosts Open Mic Night at Durty Nelly's Irish Pub on Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m. Show off your talent; everyone is welcome to grab the mic and perform any Wednesday evening on the Tavern side.
